Served 4,132 in Home Support Programs in 1989 Scugog Community Care to hold information session at hospital Durham Region Community Care Association, a non profit Home Support organization grew out of a desire to help the increas- ing number of senior citizens, the disabled and others with special needs remain in their homes for as long as possible. Services began in 1977 and has been grow- ing continually throughout the Durham Region having served 4,132 people in its various Home Support Programs in 1989. There are 3 distinct programs within the organization. The first one being Home Support which relies on the services of dedicated volunteers who are an integral part of any non profit organiza- tion to assist people with activities such as driving to Doctors ap- pointments, home maintenance, friendly visiting, meals on wheels, Local students have pancake lunch - Recent visitors with Armour and Rachel McMillan were Alma Wilson from Balsam and Mr. and Mrs. Ted Kidd. Come on out and join the men's and ladies recreational basketball and volleyball group at the S.A. Cawker School Wednesday even- ing from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. Cost is $2.00 a night when you play. We need more participants. For mere information call 985-9127. The U.C.W. evening unit is meeting Wed., March 7 at 8 p.m. Janet Banting will be guest speaker, talking on environmen- tal issues. Everyone welcome. They have some of the Greenbank cookbooks still available. They make lovely gifts. Phone 985-2006. On April 1 at 7:30 p.m. the New Jerusalem's will be at Greenbank United Church for a musical night. Come and bring your neighbour. The World day of prayer ser- vice was held Friday at our church. It was a joint ¢ ffort of our two U.C.W. groups. Mrs. McKean of the afternoon unit led the wor- ship with six of the evening unit ladies providing beautiful music. We were pleased to have some of the Seagrave ladies with us. A social hour with refreshments was enjoyed following the ser- vice. The afternoon group con- cluded the day with their March business meeting. Thanks goes to the catering committee for their and other specialized services within the 7 different Community Care offices in Durham. . The second program COPE was established to assist people 16 years and older in the communi- ty who are going through an emo- tionally stressful time in their lives. Trained volunteers working under professional supervision assist people on a one to one basis. 'They help with specific tasks to enable him/her to cope with and adapt to the situation at hand. The third program 'Caregiver Relief' provides planned, tem- porary, in home time-out to caregivers of frail elderly and disabled adults living in Durham. The main focus of this program is the primary caregiver. We hope that this service will help relieve some of the stress that results from constant caregiving. Our good work recently. They have been very busy with two lun- cheons a week. John and Norrine Cook visited Saturday with John's brother Earl at the Port Hope Nursing Home. Professor McCready visited with his sister Ida at Crystal Lake last Sunday. Our thoughts and prayers go out for Francine Wilcox and her family on the passing of her father Mr. Frank Vivian. Mr. and Mrs. Erston Coulter of Burnt River are staying for a while with their daughter Carolynn and Robert Hill. Congratulations to Lana and Larry Midgley on the safe arrival of a wee son, Evan William on Sunday. A little playmate for Clinton. Earla Hill has completed her tour of New Zealand and is now visiting friends in Melbourne for two weeks before taking her tour of Australia. Don and Helen McKean visited Sunday with Mr. and Mrs. Tom Shadrock at Unionville. Helen McKean and Muriel Gib- _ son attended a Women's Institute executive meeting Monday at the home of Mrs. John Hammer, Myrtle. Our training includes the care of the elderly and disabled with specific attention in areas such as dealing with people who have Alzheimers disease. As always Community Care is trying to reach perspective clients as well as volunteers or paid per- sonnel for our 3 programs. Scugog Community Care will be holding an information session in the library of the Community Memorial Hospital in Port Perry March 15th, 1990 from 2:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m..
