GALA GRAND OPENING! The Churchills and Staff SR (ELECTIONS for HIM and HER Police look for 19.5% (From page 1) court security will be hired Jul 2. Another 17 constables will enter the force Sept. 10. Fifteen civilians will get jobs within the various departments on Oct. 22 and an additional 12 constables will be hired Dec. 17. For the Sunderland-based 26 Division -- the main headquar- ters for officers in Scugog, Ux- bridge and Brock Township -- the increase in staff means an- other three constables and a crime investigation bureau offi- cerin thisjurisdiction. The region-wide additions will also bring the police-to- resident ratio up to one officer for every 662 people from 1-682 in 1989, Mayor Attersley said. And although the cost per person in the region to support the police force has risen to $110 from $95, Mayor Attersley said the cost per capita is the third lowest in Ontario's nine regional forces. . Durham police also have one of the largest areas to cover, second only to Sudbury, he said. The region is also growing at an incredible rate, the chair- man said. With that growth comes additional crime occur- rences. . The region-wide calls for ser- vice were 149,894 in 1988, but jumped 10.3 per cent to 164,935 callsin 1989, he said. The highest increase in calls (18 per cent) was at 26 Division. Calls to police in the northérn municipalities jumped from 10,758 t0 12,670 over the year. Mayor Attersley said the in- crease does correlate with the amount of growth in Scugog, Brock and Uxbridge. Much of this growth is in estate residen- tial homes that are g distance away from major roads and are easy targets for break, enter, and thefts. Pickering had the second highest increase in calls for ser- vice at 14 per cent. Ajax had a 12 per cent increase, Whitby 11 per cent, Oshawa 8 per cent and Newcastle 6 per cent. Regional council will decide in the upcoming budget de- 'bates whether to allow a 19.5 r cent increase to the police orce. Durham is trying to keep the net regional levy increase to 12 per cent this year, and tradi- tionally the police budget com- prises nearly 50 per cent of the region's budget. Woman dies in collision (From page 1) John Ward, 32 of Port Perry. He and Lisa Martin were rushed to hospitals in Toronto and remain in critical condition. Police say the accident took place at 10:16 PM on Durham Road 21 between Concession 6 and 7, Uxbridge Township. The Martin vehicle was west-bound and the truck driv- en by Ward eastbound. Just seconds after the colli- sion, a car driven by Dr. D. Mo- ran, 60, of Manilla struck the back end of the Martin vehicle. He escaped injury. Police estimate total damage at more than $21,000.
