16B - PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, March 20. 1990 Defeated 2-0 by strong Haliburton team Larocque Pee Wees reach tourney finals On Thursday, Larocque Elec- tric started the Port Perry Pee Wee House League Tournament against a team from Oakwood. The first period was fast, ex- citing, and scoreless. We opened the scoring 26 seconds into the second period on a hard shot by Steve Gilbert, with the assist going to Devin Blair. Two minutes later, Darren Kin- nunen scored our second goal assisted by Justin Wootton and Steve MacDonald. Oakwood got their first marker a minute and a half later, but Steve Gilbert with his second, restored our two goal lead assisted by Steven Kyte. The third period was just as ex- citing as the first two. Oakwood closed to within one goal four minutes into the period. In the last minute of the third period, Oakwood pulled their goalie and were pressing hard when Justin Wootton stole the puck and went in to score with five seconds left. Final score, Larocque 4, Oakwood 2. In our second game, we faced a team from Lindsay. This game was a carbon copy of the first with two evenly matched teams fighting for control. Because of excellent goaltending, the game was scoreless until the last minute of the first period when we went ahead 1-0 on a goal by Justin Wootton assisted by Darren Kin- nunen and Matt Baker. The wild pace continued through the second and third periods. Both teams had many scoring chances, but the goalies couldn't be beaten. With just 40 seconds left in the third period, Steve Gilbert picked off a pass near centre and raced in to score unassisted. Congratulations to our goalie Michael Wilson for a well-deserved shutout. Our opponent for the Champion- ship Game was a strong, disciplined team from Halibur- ton. This was another "barn- burner' with Haliburton holding a 2-0 lead going into the third period. Steve Gilbert, assisted by Kyle McClymont, scored in the first minute of the third to close the gap to one. Haliburton roared back a minute later to restore their 2 goal lead. Five minutes sudden victory! It looked like this one was never going to end. Both teams were getting many scoring chances, but were unable to capitalize. No luck at Golden Puck The Pee Wee's were entered in the 3-day Golden Puck Tourna- ment in North Bay this weekend. Port was eliminated 4 straight. Port played well in 2 out of the 4 games but were out-hussled in the other 2. In Port's first game against Cochrane the score was 4-1. Ports only goal in this game was a power-play goal by Mike Labanovich with assists going to Ian Shrigley and Brett Lawson. MVP -- Mike Labanovich. In game 2 Port lost by a score of 3-2 against the team from West Ferris. The score could have been a lot higher against us had it not been for our hot little number bet- ween the pipes, Scot Prechitko. Daryl Bourgeois sent the puck top high for Ports first, assists to Sandy Mark and Jason Reid. Our last goal with 17 sec. left found Matt Hobbs scrambling in front of the net and sneeking it in. Assists to Mike Labanovich and Jason Reid. MVP -- Scot Prechitko. In game 3 Port lost 3-0 to Bracebridge. Port had lots of chances in this game but needed just a little ex- tra effort to finish it off. MVP -- a hard working Jason Reid. In game 4 Port was able to go goal for goal with one of the hometown teams but ended up losing 5-2. It was tied 2-2 with 5 min. left in the third, but a few "ify"' penalties didn't let Port back in the game. Scoring Ports first was Sandy Mark tipping it in- to the top corner of the net. Assists to Ian Shrigley and Mike Labanovich. Our final goal of the game was a good rush from Jason Reid a long carry from Jason Phillips and Jeremy Geer doing the honours. MVP -- Scot Prechitko - (2 in the tourney - wow). Breathe a sigh of relief parents - I'm not mentioning any of your names concerning the wild and crazy time we had. A special thanks to all the parents who could go up early and drive all the extra kids. After an exhibition game this Sat. Port is Buffalo bound for the Pepsi-Cola Tournament March 30 - April 1. XL girls defeat Ajax On Saturday night the XL Gas Bar Eaglettes met up with the ag- gressive Ajax team to play the 4th game of the playoffs...a real "nail biter."' Both teams came out of their dressing rooms with only "Ringette" on their minds. Ajax started the scoring off dur- ing the first minute of play, then L. Hooker, Cracknell and Vanderligt found some skating room and quickly turned Ajax's defence inside out as they slipped * the ring past the goalie 3 times. Ajax retaliated with 2 more and before the first period ended, Vanderligt and Wakeford stole 2. more goals to total the score 5-3. The tendency of the Ajax team not to quit turned out to be a pro- blem for the Port team as Ajax scored 2 more goals to tie it up. Our 3 defense players, Senyk, Hiltz and Norton were instrumen- tal in setting up Cracknell, J. Hammond, L. Hooker and Wakeford for the next few goals they scored.
