(From page 12) ing the play up ice for scoring chances. Were it not for the superb work of Tony Sortino (again and again) Eagles could very well have owned a four or five goal lead after 20 minutes. The second period was a carbon copy of the first, with Ea- gles enjoying the better of the play and at the mid-point Chris Shmyr staked them to a 3-0 lead. It looked like the Eagles just had to put their game on cruise control for the final peri- od to skate away with a victory and the series. But the MoJacks, as they have done so often this season, simply refused to roll over and go to sleep. Though this was their 15th playoff game in 30 days, they came out in the third with some zip, started throwing their weight around, and for the first time in the match, began to car- ry the play to the home town team. They finally broke the scor- ing drought at 6:66 as Warren Geer pounced on a rebound in front with an assist to Menzies. And less than two minutes later, it was a new hockey game as Darrin Lee scooped up a big rebound off the back-boards that was mis-played by Eagle goalie Ian Cooper. Lee slammed the puck home as Cooper tried In vain to recover. Rob Metcalfe drew the helper as he let the shot go from the point that came off the boards. Eagles George Pithie was serving a holding penalty when Dave Burnett got the tying goal at 13:31 from in front of the net on a set-up from Harman and Steve Connors. And that set the stage for a final frenzied five minutes of the most nerve -bending hockey Junior C fans have seen any- where. At 18:16, Todd Taylor sent the MoJacks and their fans wild when he got a shot away through a big crowd around the Eagle net, and with a 4-3 lead, it looked like the miracle come- back was in the bag. With the Eagle goalie on the bench for an extra attacker, the MoJacks were able to clear the puck the length of the ice and it hit the goal post and slith- ered through the open crease. Eagles came back up ice with six attackers and with 21 seconds left, Shawn Rekker got his stick on the puck to knot things at 4-4, wl the game into OT and setting the stage for the MoJack Magic. SLAP SHOTS: If they handed out MVP awards for this series, Tony Sortino would be the win- ner hands-down. The MoJack netminder was brilliant in all seven games, and goaltending certainly was the major difference in this se- ries. I'm sure most of the Eagles were seeing Sortino in their dreams (nightmares?) How many people were in the Bowmanville Arena for game seven? I overheard a Dur- MoJack supporters, and there are lots of them, voice their approval after the team's re- markable come-back victory in Bowmanville last Thursday night. Fans have caught Mo- Jack fever in the playoffs, and they'll be with this team every step of the way from here on. Eagles took game six 4-2 GAME SIX It was a different Bowman- ville squad that showed up in Port Perry March 13 for game six in this series. Facing elimination, it was obvious the Eagles had a new game plan that stressed de- fense. And after getting an early 2-0 lead, the Eagles did a su- perb job in shutting off the Mo- Jack power the rest of the way as they went home with a 4-2 win and the series deadlocked at three games each. Larry Perris pumped home a rebound at 7:09 and George Pithie found the corner less than two minutes later. Although the MoJacks ap- peared tentative in this period, they cut the margin to 2-1 at 19:30 as Dave Burnett scored on a nice set up by John Har- man and Brad Menzies. Midway through the sec- ond, the MoJacks picked up the pace and sheer hard work paid off on a goal by Kevin Gibson. He kept the puck in the Ea- e zone, then took passes from ge Vernon and Todd Taylor and was able to muscle one through Ian Cooper. The rest of the period fea- tured a lot of close checking, and it appeared as if both clubs were looking for that one "big break." Eagles went ahead for good at 8:01 of the final frame as Glenn Campbell was able to tip the puck past Tony Sortino on a power play. And they added the insu- rance marker with 2:23 left while short-handed when Shane Armstrong converted a two on one break. Not only did the Eagles check the MoJacks at every turn which created a large num- ber of turn-overs, they stayed out of the penalty box, some- thing which hurt them badly in the previous game 9-0 blow-out. In fact, both clubs stuck strictly to hockey with just a handful of minor penalties called. The tight checking and few solid scoring chances was more typical of playoffhockey. MoJacks were held to 21 shots on goal. Sortino faced 30, and he stopped a couple of breakaways that really kept the MoJacks in the game. Doug right on Doug Scott knows a thing or two about the game of hock- ey, butis telepathic? Early in the third period of game seven, when the picture looked mighty bleak for the Mo- Jacks as they trailed Eagles 3-0, Doug noted the line of Menzies, Harman and Geer coming over the boards for a shift and said. "They're going to get one right here, just watch." Sure enough. The puck was no sooner dropped when Men- zies fed a pass to Geer in front and bingo, it was in the net, launching the MoJacks on their amazing comeback. "How did you know they were going to score," this writer asked Doug, who just smiled and continued to watch the ac- tion on theice. Doug coached the talented trio when they were on his Mid- get squad a few years back. Per- haps he remembered some- thing. fio added, "they never quit." How true. PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, March 20, 1990 - 17B Final few moments of gome nerve-bending ham Police officer in the lobby say "atleast 1600." The 650-60 draw was worth a cool $943, which gives you some idea of how many fans clicked through the turn-stiles. And that would put a smile on the MoJack treasurer. Un- der a league agreement, the teams split game seven gate , after expenses. Can a hockey game be inju- rious to one's health just watch- ing? (See Viewpoint, Page 7) Are these guys happy? You bet. That's Kevin Desrosi- ers, Len Glacalone and Rob Willetts savouring the moment.
