Guides earn cit by Heather McCrae To celebrate Thinking Day the Fourth Port Perry Brownie Pack entertained the congregation of the Scugog Island Church with the singing of Kim Bay Ya. A special enrolment ceremony was held in February for two new Brownies of this energetic group of girls. Namely Melissa Bellar and Jen- nifer Van Hoof. Welcome to the pack, Melissa and Jennifer. Joy McKay of Sunderland delighted the girls with her visit on March 19, at the Island Hall. Joy taught the Signaller badge. The purpose of this badge is to encourage the Brownie to learn a new method of communication. They must know the alphabet in Braille, Semaphore, Morse Code or Finger Spelling. Joy was a real hit with the girls. She taught them the alphabet in sign language and the Brownie's motto "Lend A Hand" along with the words "Love" and "Peace." The Third Port Perry Brownies sent Thinking Day cards to their friends in England. Bunny Rowland visited the girls in late February and talked about the World Friendship Badge. Bunny had been Brown Owl of this pack for ten years. Welcome back, Bunny! The First Port Perry Guides were taught the First Aid Badge by Mr. Jim Hyndman, a St. John's First Aid Instructor. On February 19, the girls enjoyed an International Dinner, cooked by themselves, and the delicious menu was lasagne from Italy, tri- fle from the United Kingdom and caesar salad from the United States. On February 26, the Con- stable Peter Wraight of Durham Regional Police spoke to the girls about drugs and taught the girls the Law Awareness badge. Bunny Rowland taught the World Trefoil Badge to the First Seagrave Guides on February 12. The girls celebrated Thinking Day with a parade during a Seagrave United Church service. A swimming party at Uxpool was held at the end of the month. The Fourth Port Perry Guides worked on the final stages of their Citizen badge and attended a por- tion of a regular council meeting on March 19. This seven session course will begin at 7:30 p.m., on Monday April 9 in the Lounge of the Port Perry United Church, 294 Queen Street, Port Perry. Based on behaviour modifica- tion techniques, "Countdown" currently has a 79 percent success rate. Classes are small, and all sessions are held in a relaxed and supportive atmosphere, under the direction of a trained Lung Association Course Leader. Unlike many commercial Stop Smoking programs (that can cost between $200 and $700) the Lung Association offers Countdown for a very moderate fee. This Course, regularly $95, will be offered at a special "Welcome Spring" dis- count rate of $65 - a $30 saving. Credit card registrations can be accepted. The First Port Perry Pathfinders had two girls from the Canada World Youth Pro- gram, namely, Sophia Ducharme and Isabell Tlubault, visit and tell of their experiences in Equador. In mid-February seventeen pathfinders took part in the St. John's Ambulance Emergency First Aid Course instructed by Jim Hyndman at the Lion's Hall in Manchester. All the girls pass- ed and the pins and certificates will be presented in April. This was'an eight hour course. Well done, girls! In the Pathfinder program there are many challenges which must be completed. These challenges are designed to be done in small groups, or by a unit, to encourage friendship, co- operation and helping others. The Pathfinders visited CKAR/CKQT radio station in Oshawa. This visit was a part of their Arts and Recreation challenge. While visiting the station D.J. Alex Davies played a request for the girls and announced on the air they were there. F.M. host John Willis guided the girls on a tour, something they all enjoyed. Councillor Marilyn Pearce visited the girls on March 21 teaching parts of their Citizenship challenge. She gave a good talk to the girls on all levels of govern- ment and local politics. Highlights were on the proposed Sports Com- plex, what our taxes pay for and the development of the plaza on Highway 7A. The Guiding movement in Port Perry is supporting the Jamaican Relief Fund. Ontario GREENBANK NEWS by Doris Hill George and Gladys Van De Walker attended a memorial ser- vice in Oshawa on Sunday even- ing for their former minister Reverend Charles Newton at Nor- thminster United Church. Congratulations to Laurie and Norm Leduc on the birth of a son, a St. Patrick's day Grandson for - Rod and Marie Foster. : A good time was had by all at the euchre party held in Green- bank hall on Friday evening. Prizes were won by Ladies: Marlene Blain, Jean Clarke, and Jean Rodd. Gents: Cliff Rodd, Roy Blain, and Willy Stone. Door Prize: Doris Hill. Another euchre party will be held on Friday April 20, come, and bring a friend. Sunday visitors with Mr. and Mrs. Brian Beattie were Mr. and Mrs. Fab Cipro and children of Pickering. A large congregation attended the Communion Service at Green- bank church on Sunday, with beautiful music provided by the choir. The Good Friday Service will be held at Pinedale Church at 8:00 p.m.. The High School Youth are presenting an Easter Sunrise Service at Clifford Short's Farm at 6:00 a.m.. The Future of the Family Farms: "Borrowed Time" a T.V. documentary on the family farm financial situation and the role of the church will be aired on the T.V. Ontario on March 28 and 29, at 9:00 p.m.. The Greenbank U.C.W. invites you to an evening of entertain- ment provided by "New Jerusalem," at the church on Sun- day April 1, at 7:30 p.m.. They are a High School Youth Cantata group from Cannington. Their music will be an inspiration to all. Refreshments will be served following the one hour show.
