Myth shattered, as two Cornish girls high achievers in Mathematics Exam Contrary to popular belief girls do excel in mathematics. Twelve local students recent- ly received their marks from the Fifth American Junior High School Mathematics Ex- amination, and the two top fin- ishers from R.H. Cornish Pub- lic School were female. It has long been a myth that the female gender is not as fluent in mathematics as males. According to Reg Philip, a math teacher at R.H. Cornish he has never believed this, that is exactly what it is..a myth, and that these test results should prove that. The math test is a worldwide examination, this year being written by a record breaking 203,305 students from 3,955 registered schools across the globe. Adrienne Fowler, a grade 8 student at R.H. Cornish Public School registered a 23/25 mark on the test. This placed her on the world-wide mathematics honor role. Adrienne finished in the top 300 girls who wrote the exam. Her 23 correct an- swers also placed her in the top 1% of all students who wrote. The second place finisher from Cornish, Tabatha May missed out on making the hon- or role by one mark. The national average for this exam was 10.19, in which 11 out of the 12 Cornish students achieved. The mathematics exam is a 40 minute, 25 question multi- ple choice test which is done by selected students in grades 5 through 8 every year. The purpose of the competi- tion is not designed to measure students, achievements, but rather to test problem solving ability in a number of different areas. Organizers of the examina- tion hope that by having the teachers review the solutionsin class, the students will learn more about mathematics and problem solving.
