~ J es: TR AIS LN wa IRI roe 4 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, March 27, 1990 Could be another six years before GO Train pulls into Oshawa station It may be six more years be- fore GO Transit trains are pull- ing into stations in Oshawa, re- gional councillors heard Wednesday. Kevin Pask of the Ontario Ministy of Transportation told councillors that funding will not be given for the project until environmental approval is granted. If a green light is given for the project, the trains could be delayed for years because of major reconstruction of roads and overpasses affected by the train. Some of the improvements include widening Bloor St., doubling the lanes from two to four on Thorton Rd. and recon- structing the Victoria St. over- pass, Reno Radolli, a consul- tant for M. M. Dillon told councillors. Work on the $50-million pro- ject recently has dealt with noise assesment and traffic problems, Mr. Radolli said. The project will be completed in stages, Mr. Radolli said. After the presentation, coun- cillors urged the GO planners to fully prepare for the number of riders expected to use the ser- vice. They commented that many of the services (parking, road improvements) were full to capacity on the first day of operation when the service was expanded to Whitby. Oshawa councillor also ques- tion the delegates about dis- abled facilities. Mr. Pask confessed that there is insufficient accessabili- ty for disabled persons in the present plan. Mr. Nicholson blasted the of- ficials stating that the service should be accessable to all tax- payers. "I urge you not to putin a sys- tem that is discriminatory to disabled persons," Mr. Nichol- son stated. 20 accidents last Friday Officers from Durham's 26 Division were kept busy Friday responding to almost 20 traffic accidents. Staff Sergeant Bill Van Dole- weerd told the Port Perry Star that road conditions were to blame for most of the mishaps in Scugog, Uxbridge and Brock townships. "It was a freak thing," he con- tinued, "but once the sanders got out everything got under control." Although the number of acci- dents were high, most of them resulted in property damage only. "There was no real personal injury," he said, stating that all victims were released from hos- pital the same day.
