Individual health cards TORONTO, March 21 -- Starting this spring, new individual health numbers, on plastic cards, will be provided to every bona fide resi- dent of Ontario, Health Minister Elinor Caplan announced today. Health coverage, including On- tario Drug Benefits, will remain the same, but everyone will even- tually need the new health card with its 10-digit number, as old OHIP paper cards and numbers are phased out. "The introduction of this new card means people's health needs ANALDA LANDSCAPING 8 NURSERIES (5 miles east of Port Perry) HWY. 7A and West 1/4 Line . 986-4771 649-2515 852.9585 LANDSCAPE DESIGN and CONSTRUCTION * Interlocking Stone * Flagstone (Dry, or in concrete) * Retaining Walls & Steps - Timber * Rockeries * Foundation & Large Tree Plantings **Sod and Seed * Fencing & Decks - Stone Ep. The cards are part of the health ministry's modernization and consolidation of all its information systems. The overhaul should rovide savings of more than $1.5 billion over 10 years, with 10 per- cent of that amount resulting from use of the new health cards. . "Health services now account for one third of the provincial budget, and we owe it to the tax- payers of Ontario to plan and manage those services using the best possible information," Mrs. Caplan said. The information the new system provides on the use of the health services will be of great benefit in the long-term. The "ministry will be able to use this data base to detect health trends and plan for future demands on resources. Following this year's initial registration, newborns and new residents will be added as they ar- rive. Each person's health number will be assigned for life. registration kits will be mailed to every household in the pro- vince, over a two-week period beginning April 17. OPP cars get new bold look 'The Ontario Provincial Police will be unveiling the new, bold look of its cruisers with photo op- portunities for media who contact their local detachments. Most noticeable to the motoring public will be a change from the familiar two-tone black and white police cruisers to a all-white vehi- cle with highly visible, reflective blue and gold decal stripes down both sides. - " "The new look to our cruisers reflects the new look of the OPP in the 1990s," said OPP Commis- sioner Thomas hm Ah quite a change from an white design introduced in 1941." The use of decals on the all- white vehicles, prompted by manufacturers' plans.to phase out - production of two-tone vehicles, will result in a $100,000 a year sav- ing which is the estimated cost of painting the 1,200 vehicle fleet in the traditional black and white pattern. The new-look vehicles will be completely phased in across On- tario by 1993. In addition to the gold and blue stripe, the vehicles will also have the OPP crest on the doors and the district '"1-800" number on the rear panel 4s well as the word police 6n the front fender and rear. "Studies have shown that white reflects more light than any other colour. Combine that with the reflective decal markings and we have a police service vehicle which we believe will be even more visible than the old fashion- ed black and white cruiser," said Commissioner O'Grady. Notice of when the new vehicles are arriving at local detachments and arrangements for photos can be made by contacting the Public Information Coordinator at any OPP detachment.
