HI) ul ) Vi nt Letters io the editor ECE deserves better recognition To the Editor: Hi! my name is Cathy and I'm a second year Durham College Student. I am currently taking Early Childhood Education. A few more weeks and I will have com- pleted my course. I will then have the qualifications necessary to work as a teacher in a daycare. I have many options available to me besides working in a daycare but working in a daycare is what I have chosen. The profession I have chosen is not highly paid but it is one that is needed in our society. Why is it that daycare workers are not given the status that they deserve? I hear the names we are so often called, "babysitters," "mother," or "the daycare per- son.'"' These names really make Early Childhood Education look bad and also do not reflect the job we do. Early Childhood Educators have an enormous responsibility. They are not only responsible for the care and education of children but must also establish the learn- ing environment, select and develop goals, manage the classroom, choose appropriate material, evaluate the children's learning, report on special needs of children to the appropriate authorities and work as part of a team with other professionals. Our status isn't going to change over night, but I'm hoping it will over time because I think Early Childhood Educators need to be recognized for the important job they do. Cathy Elford Port Perry. Get out of my way attitude To the Editor: For the past ten or so years since moving to Port Perry, I have been using Durham Regional Road No. 2 (Ontario Street or Oshawa Road, as some people claim). Soon to be Lilla Street! During this time, I have witnessed daily occurrances of impatient and inconsiderate drivers who will not abide by the posted speed limit in the area. Neither do they abide by the solid yellow lines. For what? For power? To be on time for work? I wonder what has made drivers so aggressive? What makes people think that the rules of the road do not apply to them. In all fairness, (In my lifetime) I have seen all ages and all kinds the same attitude "GET OUT OF MY WAY." With new traffic generated on our roads they shall become ever more of a death trap. After reading this letter I do hope it will make drivers think the next time they speed past the vehicle in front of them - just so they can be first and wait at the next stop light - that speeding and careless driving - just is not worth it. . I also wonder when and if the Region of Durham are still plan- ning a left turn lane into Apple Valley area?
