OVER 20 YEARS EXPERIENCE RR4, UXBRIDGE Durham No. 23, just s. of 47 (416)852-7722 Bunnies are a popular gift at Easter time, but the Ontario Humane Soclety cautions parents about buying one as a pet for children. Dave Grandy (pictured above) of Grandview Rabbitry Is starting up a rabbht rental service just in time for Easter. Please see story for detalls. Cetol 1 and Don't run out and buy the kiddies a pet bunny for Easter. That's the word handed down by the Ontario Humane Socie- ty. "The Society is opposed to the whole concept of Easter bun- nies," Christine Mason, direc- tor of publicity for the Humane Sodety told the Port Perry ta r. Although Ms. Mason was un- able to give statistics on the number of bunnies taken to the Society each year, she said the amount is staggering. "So many end up unwanted after Easter," she said. And when that happens, the bunnies are taken to the Hu- mane Society, local animal shelters or are just set free in the wild, Ms. Mason said. Altho rabbits are cute and cuddi , the Socjesy has a hard time adopting the bunnies out tohomes. "Bunnies are really hard to place," she said. "We can't keep them forever. Many of them have tobe put down." Setting the rabbits free in the wild isn't always the solution either. "Domestic rabbits may sur- vive the summer but parish when winter comes along," Ms. Mason said. PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, April 3, 1990 - 11B has found the solution to the problem. David Grandy, 19, is Slathing up arent-a-bunny business an just in time for Easter. The George Brown College student operates Grandview Rabbitry on Ashburn Road. He will rent out one of his 80 or 80 rabbits from spring to fall, he told the Port Perry Star. Each bunny comes with its own cage, a week's supply of food and a list of "dos and don'ts," Dave said. To rent a bunny for the sea- son would cost about $50 -- $20 for the bunny, $20 for the cage and a $10 refundable deposit on the cage. Rental fees are negotiable for short term renters. Besides the "basic bunny", Dave also rents non-allergic and angora bunnies, although the rent agreement may be a bit Free Pickup & Delivery Free Estimates DO) 105-3 COUNTRY UPHOLSTERY THE REGIONAL MUNICIPALITY OF DURHAM Young entrepreneur finds solution to unwanted bunnies....rent one! different for the latter type of rabbit, he said. "Angora rabbits have to be plucked every three to six months," Dave said, "or else they get hair block like cats do and it can eventually kill them." Unknown to most people, rabbits can be "kitty litter trained or paper trained," he said. "It's very simple to do and the litter box method doesn't smell." Dave has a real love for bun- nies. Although he had bunnies when he was younger, he did not go into business until he was 13. His rabbits have won several awards at area fall fairs, as well as the Royal Agricultural Win- ter Fair held in Toronto. To rent a bunny from Dave call 655-3660.
