TR PE ret Cr yr ORR anil Me SI I Em og Seri ene Members of the Oshawa Skeet Club fear they could be forced to go elsewhere if Scugog Township allows residential de- velopment near their shooting range south of Port Perry. Skeet Club secretary James Anderson told council Monday afternoon "we are tak- Ing a very strong stand to show our real concerns." The Club, which has about 250 members, has skeet shoot- ing and a rifle range on land it Town Hall Anniversary (From page 14) offering a Gala subscription series highlighted by a return of David Walden's show "A Night at the Grand" (some of you may remember original fundraising events undertaken for the pur- chase of the Hall's grand piano). Many citizens will be contacted regarding the Hall's Concert Series, and ads will appear in the Port Perry Star (a committed Hall supporter from the restora- tion's outset, earning the gratitude of the directorship and the Hall's users). If there are citizens who would like to help the old lady to con- tinue to show her medals -- and her mettle, the Town Hall Board would love to hear from them (contact David Sparling at 985-8001). In what ways can the public assist? There are several: by becoming a member of the working directorate (and yes, the _- chairperson DOES do chairs) or "a sub-committee member, by volunteering time during clean-up season (June/July), by becoming "+. a patron/donor (there is a sliding scale from 30-dollar ads to One thousand and over endowments call 985-3714 for details and dona- tions), by subscribing to the year- ly concert series (call 987-8900), and/or by attending Hall-based functions and events. Try some of these, especially if you are a newcomer to this growing com- munity. And make yourself feel good by helping the old lady look good. You'll be glad you did. Community service benefits everyone -- a time-tested fact. And those who patronize Port Perry's most eminent public building may all share in the pro- cess of capturing a little time, event by event. Not a bad pro- spect at all. The Hall bell's knell has yet to toll. Even the Mayor now agrees. EMMERSON INSURANCE ERS LIMITED 193 QUEEN ST., PORT PERRY, ONT. What has the Club mem- bers worried is a proposal for a new development on the Scugog side of the road, directly across from the shooting range. That proposal calls for an 18-hole golf course and 70 es- tate residential buildinglots. The Skeet Club has been at its present location since 1967, said Mr. Anderson. He told council that if resi- dential development went ahead there, it would only be a matter of time before home owners would be taking legal action, or demanding the skeet and rifle shooting cease. Two other skeet clubs in southern Ontario are already experiencing such problems with encroaching development. "Houses are very incompat- ible with skeet shooting, which is done outside. There is just no way to buffer the noise" (shot- guns and rifles) he said. He said the proposed devel- opment is causing "very serious Skeet shooters oppose houses concern about the future exis- tance of the club." Legal battles (with nearby homeowners) would be very costly to the point of driving away members. And if the club had to fold, it's not likely another property could be found within easy driv- ing distance for its members, he said. He said the membership feels so strongly about the is- sue, it wants the Ontario Mu- nicipal Board to make a final ruling on the plans for the sub- division. Members of council lis- tened to the presentation by Mr. Anderson. Mayor Howard Hall told him that since the proposed de- velopment is on the Oak Ridges Moraine, it's unlikely the Re- gion's Planning department will approve 70 estate lots." And he assured Mr. Ander- son the proposed development would get a very "thorough study" through the planning process. ~ Certificates D.J. TAYLOR [=.c.
