The shelter will consist of a Ontario Hydro rates to rise 7.8% next year Ontario residents can ex- pect to pay at least 7.8 per cent more on their hydra bills in 1991; Ontario Hydro president Robert Franklin said there are numerous pressures driving the cost of hydro up and "Hydro cannot keep the 1991 increases in line with previous price in- creases." MP Ross Stevenson to discuss G.S.T. as guest speaker at business seminar Ross Stevenson will be the guest speaker at a busi- ness seminar to be held at the Masonic Hall on April 17. Mr. Stevenson, the M.P. for Durham will be speak- ing to the audience about the G.S.T.(Goods and Ser- vices Tax.) All members of the Cham- ber of Commerce are invited to attend the seminar, and Mr. Stevenson will be avail- ble after his speech to an- swer any questions. The seminar is set to get underway-at 7:30 p.m. These pressures include wage and benefit increases to Hydro employees, uire- ments for environmental pro- _ tection and the cost of new gen- erating and transmission facilities. The use of electricity in On- tario grew five per cent last year and Franklin says the utility ex- ue. And 1991 is the year two units at the Darlington nuclear plant are slated to gointo opera- tion. He also points out that the federal goods and service tax will add to hydro bills. The 7.8 figure cited by Franklin is an average for all customers. The bill in 1991 for large in- dustrial users will be 7.4 per - cent more and what Hydro charges the 316 municipal utili- ties in Ontario for power will go up by 7.9 per cent. Hydro estimates this will add $4.50 per month to the av- erage household bill (based on 1,000 KW-hours per month) However, that figure could be higher if local utilities are forced to pass on increases in their operating costs to their customers. The proposed rate hikes by Ontario Hydro have been sub- mitted to the Ontario Minister of Energy and will be reviewed by the Ontario Energy Board. Refreshments will be served.
