Well, this issue of the pur- chase of the street sweeper is the incentive that I needed to speak up. As far as incentives go - the con- dition of our road alone should have been enough to make this letter a must! I have just finish- ed driving the full length of this road - Concession 8 - Nestleton area, - this is a "dirt" road. Oh - I suppose the Roads Dept. would classify it a gravel road but it re- quires a certain stretch of the im- agination to call it this. The majority of the road cover is sand (as evidenced by what has washed into the now non-existant ditches) and the rest is large rocks - average size 5x5x5x5 - Yes - they feel square as you bump over them!! Thus I can't help but wonder where the priorities lie and also where is the common sense of our "elected represen- tatives" as far as road maintenance in Scugog Township. Is it really more important to Street sweeper is just another 'plum" sweep sand off smooth paved roads just so a little sand does not blow about while in town - (Try living on a dirt road - where every passing vehicle stirs up a mini sand storm) - than to properly gravel them. You notice - I did not say PAVE - taxes are high enough thanks!! Perhaps the sand that is swept off Port Perry streets will be dumped on our roads to fill the holes - thus we to - as was infer- red - will benefit from the sweeper - purchase! Personally, I would rather have a few decent loads of gravel. I have lived in this area all my life, and on this road for 10 years, and have seen the condition & general upkeep of this and our other roads steadily deteriorate - in spite of increasingly higher taxes. I feel that Mr. Hvidsten, is out of touch with the feelings of those of us who live in the rural areas of the township. Councillor Cochrane was just stating the true feelings of many of us - namely that, this is "just another plum" for Port Perry and of NO benefit to the rest of the TAXPAYERS.
