Honouring excellence in com- munity theatre for the 1989-90 season, Adjudicators Ron Cameron (Musical plays) and Christopher Covert (Dramas) handed out thirty of the statuettes during a crowded Gala Awards ceremony and dinner dance at Toronto's Skyline Airport Hotel on Saturday night. Amongst a record-setting fifty- four productions in competition, Port Perry did not go unnoticed. In the Musical category, Scugog Choral Society Artistic Musical Director Tom Millar's 'superb musical score' for Anne Bonne (an original) was nominated for one of four adjudicator's awards. Catherine Millar, also known locally as well as provincially for her superb musical contributions, was nominated in the very close race for 'Best Performance by a Female in a Leading Role for 'energy and appeal as great as Dame Kiri Te Kanawa's' (the famed New Zealand soprano) in her title role of Anne Bonney. In his second adjudicator's award, Cameron, after a con- gratulatory preamble, presented a prized Thea for 'stage manage- ment under conditions which could be nearly described as those of the Black Hole of Calcutta' to Lynn Relf, stage manager and highly efficient assistant for the Scugog Choral Society's produc- tion of Anne Bonney. This original musical also represented many hours of commitment for its creators, Tom Millar and Nina Foxall, its forty-three per- formers, and its many behind the scenes workers, playing to sold- out houses during its November- December run. Overall Musical award winner was Scarborough Musical Theatre Inc.'s production of Pip- pin, which secured four awards and seven nominations. The Drama Category saw well- known local theatrical group The Borelians of Port Perry, who had entered both Death of A Salesman DSO -- and Brighton Beach Memoirs in the competition, garner one coveted Thea and three other nominations. Singled out for nominations were John Frankom, director of Brighton Beach Memoirs, in the adjudicator's award for 'best new director' and Louise Lukiancuk in the 'Best Performance by a Female in a Supporting Role' for her well- played maternal role in Brighton Beach. Also in the supporting role category, this time 'Best Perfor- mance by a Male', Borelians' Steve Foote scored a nomination for his intense protrayal of Biff in Death of a Salesman. But, as adjudicator Covert pointed out, his most unusual award of the evening, a Thea for 'Best Performance by a Female in a Leading Role', went to the weighty role of a male, the adoles- cent commentator Eugene in Neil Simon's Brighton Beach Memoirs, played with conviction by teenage -- and female -- Autumn Smith, no small ac- complishment. The cast, crew and director of Brighton Beach were justifiably thrilled and pro- ud of Autumn's win. 'Best Presentation of Play' award went to Markham Little Theatre's lively comedy A Flea In "People are still willing to do an honest day's work. The trouble is, they want a week's pay for it."
