A RINNE TRY FESS Evening of great 'one act plays'to P3% be featured at Borelians Festival A sampling of some of the best one act plays ever written will be performed at the Town Hall this week. The Borelians Festival of One Act Plays brings together acting troupes from across Dur- ham Region to perform works by such gross as Tennesse Wil- liams, Thorton Wilder and An- ton Chekov. "Hello from Bertha", "The Valiant", and "The Long Christ- mas Dinner" will be performed on opening night ursday, May 10. Hello from Bertha is one of Tennesse Williams' rare one act plays. The play, which is about three hookers in the south, is a Borelian entry directed by Kathryn Cleveland. It stars Louise Lukianchuk, Kari Townsend and Patti Gallant. _ The second entry, The Val- iant, is an extremely famous play written by Robert Middle- mass and Holworthy Hall that has been translated into 17 dif- ferent languages. Susan Ellis directs this Port Perry High School entry about a man on death row who meets A woman claiming to be his sis- Yr. O'Neill Collegiate High School performs the last playin Thursday night's trio. The Long Christmas Dinner is written by Thornton Wilder. Mr. Wilder is also known for his play Our Town. Lleweland Jones will direct O'Neill'sentry. The plays Friday night lean more toward the comical vein, starting with Don't Look Down. Robert Craddock to display paintings at Scugog Library show The next exhibition at Scugog Memorial Public Library will be the Watercolours and Oil Pain- tings of Robert Craddock. It opens on Saturday, May 12 and con- tinues until June 1. Co Robert Craddock was born in Toronto in 1924. He served with: the R.C.A.F. from 1943 to 1947, then studied oil and watercolour painting at Western and Ontario College of Art. = ~~ As Art Director for a major packaging design studio for over thirty years, his designs have achieved some thirty-four awards fron the "Packaging Association of Canada." Robert taught ail painting; both Wii ean, "and advanced classes, for seven years at Cedar- brae Collegiate in Scarborough, Ontario. He now resides in Port Perry. His paintings have been displayed in Toronto galleries and sold in Canada, U.S.A. and Europe. He is well known for his versatility and vivid colours. Robert is a member of the Art League of Manatee County in Florida, and the Oshawa Art Association. He will be conducting a two day workshop for the 0.A.A. at the Arts Resource Centre in Oshawa on May 19 and 20 from 9 a.m.- 4 p.m. Watercolour and oil painting will be included in the workshop. This summer Robert will be holding classes for children and adults in Port Perry. Please contact the artist for fur- ther information. The play is about a man who climbs out onto a high ledge to retrieve his wallet and is mis- taken as a jumper. Courtice High School per- forms the Jay Folb play, under the direction of Ron Skeffing- ton. ' Mr. Skeffington also directs the second entry of the night -- another Courtice play -- enti- tled An Actor's Nightmare. The play is a comedy about theatre written by Christopher Durang. The night wraps up with The Marriage Proposal which has been described as a comedy of _ |i manners. Thespis theatre group from the Pickering-Scarborough area will be performing the play about the problems of mar- riage in Russia, under the di- rectorship of John Lukianchuk. Saturday evenings perfor- mance will open with a rerun of Hello from Bertha -- the Ten- nesse Williams play about three southern "belles." A Borelian production of Sail- ing follows.
