Of these children who are sexually assaulted, 85% were assaulted by someone they knew and trusted, such as a parent, brother, sister, uncle, or family friend. This reason why t Prevention Program. Outreach Abuse prevention is a non-profit organization founded in 1983 to reduce and prevent child abuse. It provides a wide range of programmes that focus on abuse prevention for all ages. According to Ann Lane, su- pervisor at the Nursery School, many people feel that the age of these children is too young to teach about such things, that it destroys their innocence. The Outreach program out- lines that children should be taught the facts as soon as they understand language. The reasoning behind this is that children only talk about abuse after it has happened and it is too late, and if a child has correct information about abuse, it will be harder for someone to trick, exploit, or use achild. As well as being taught about familial abuse, the children are igh peryentage is one e Blackstock Co- op Nursery School has imple- mented an Outreach Abuse being taught about abduction. "It is something people do not believe happens in a small com- munity like this(Blackstock), but it does happen," said Sheila Brunet, president of Black- stock Nursery School execu- tive. The children have just com- pleted a five week course on the subject, and Mrs. Lane states that the children have learned alot, and she has had encourag- ing input from mothers. Mrs. Brunet stated they are trying to impress certain things upon the children. "We want the children to un- derstand that their body be- longs to them, and if someone does something that feels wrong, it probably is," she said. The program also stresses to children to tell someone if such abuse happens. To keep telling people until someone listens, and believes them. The Outreach program in- cludes posters, and activities for the children to complete to learn more. The teachers at the nursery also attended a work- shop held at Durham College to learn more, to exchange with the children. The program outlines what child abuse is. That it is any sexual behavior or contact be- tween a child, and a personin a position of trust. Sexual behavior is a crime and a betrayal of trust. Another is to look for signs because children often do not tell. Secrecy is a major part of abuse. Often trickery, bribes, affection, and force are used to gain submission. Children fear punishment, and many just do not know how to tell. If a child does open up, a lis- tener should let the child know they are believed, it is not their fault, they are brave to tell, you will do what you can, and they (416) 723-9022 f \ on program are going to be ohay.
