"They also don't know that there are simple methods of prevention that can protect their dog from this disease." Heartworm disease is caused by a parasite which is transmit- ted by mosquitoes. When a con- taminated mosquito bites a dog, it leaves behind microscopic heartworm larvae that migrate through the tissue and, after a few months, travel to the heart where they mature. Heartworms, up to 35 cm long, impair the flow of blood and cause damage to the heart, lungs and liver. In some cases damage to the internal organs is so extensive that the condition may be fatal. Mature heartworms reproduce new larvae which can be picked up by a mosquito and transmitted to another dog to start the cycle again. As a result, an infected dog becomes a reservoir for the infec- tion, putting other unprotected dogs at risk. "Dog owners should first con- tact their veterinarian to know if heartworm disease is a problem in their area,'"' Dr. Wilder said. "If it is, the veterinarian will pro- vide all the necessary information regarding simple preventive medication that can effectively eliminate any threat of heart- worm disease and ultimately reduce the risk for other dogs."
