Farmers are facing unpredic- table commodity prices, unfair in- ternational subsidy practices, and uncertain growing conditions. Farming is a highly capital- intensive business and high in- terest rates have put a strain on many farm operations. To help out, the Province is initiating this program to ease the cashflow pro- blems of farmers in this fiscal year. Ontario expects the federal government will match the pro- vincial funds as part of a new special assistance program an- nounced recently by Ottawa. The Province also will be pro- viding $48 million over four years in financial assistance to farmers for soil conservation under the Land Stewardship program. This program has been tremendously successful. All of us benefit from the assistance it gives in pro- moting environmentally sound agricultural practices. Since 1987, more than $21 million in land stewardship grants have been paid out to about 8,000 farmers to help them change agricultural practices and improve soil and Obituary erosion control techniques on more than 940,000 acres of Ontario farmland.
