- Se rN: lili (From page 1): When all snow has melted and your lawn and garden are no longer soggy, rake leaves and clear all leftover debris from fall. Be gentle since perennials such as tulips and crocuses will be popping up. Avid gardeners can start planting seeds for annuals and more delicate vegetables in flats indoors. Tomatoes, peppers and broccoli get a better start this way. Most garden cen- tres carry complete lists and instructions for grow- ing seeds in flats. Trees and shrubs Early spring is the best time to prune hedges and trees. It's less trauma for them and less leaf raking for you. Garden centres can usually provide any pruning information required. Pruning not only keeps hedges and trees in shape, but also affects the crop of fruit-bearing varieties. Pro- per pruning encourages new growth and more flower production. Many trees will benefit from a fertilizer applied in the form of tree spikes in early spring. These are nail- ed into the soil at the outer branch limits around the tree. They're available at garden centres along with ly them. Lawn problems If a soil test shows your soil is too acidic, it can be neutralized using lime. The soil is often too acidic in places where grass won't grow, or where a mossy growth has started. Grass likes neutral soil, lots of sun and moderate temperatures. Lime is spread and raked into the soil. The area should then be watered and left for a week before reseeding. It should be ap- plied not more frequently than every three years. If there are patches of turf and holes in your lawn, moles may be tunnelling it to get grubs. Get rid of the grubs and you get rid of the moles. Garden centres can recommend the proper insecticides. One way to revive a poor- looking lawn is by aerating it in spring. An aerator, which can be rented from most garden centres, cuts narrow plugs out of the soil. This allows oxygen to get down to the roots which helps grass to grow better. A lawn that is too tightly packed has trouble growing. Crabgrass and other weeds can be controlled by applying a weed preventer/fertilizer com- bination early before the information on how to app- [~le]-R@-1d=1- ACR s Nc] -Ra=S-R @-N=1WES] _|=An poly Ny gel] TORONTO LINE 686-3931 [SCY Tate I @ TUT oY: Ta ol = ET TTC TA) PORT PERRY For r=4= Years 112 SCUGOG STREET PORT PERRY 985-3398 . 985-3110 sesesessasssescescssssesescenene . However, if you're going to reseed part of the lawn, don't add fertilizer/weed killer in that area. It will also kill the grass seeds. Garden centres can recom- mend alternative ways of seeding and feeding. Gardens and flower beds When the spring bulbs are popping up, its time to start turning the soil in the flower beds. This should be done gently so that bulbs and other roots are not disturbed. Now is the time to enrich the soil with old leaves, grass clippings, straw, com- post or other forms of organic material. Garden centres sell alternatives such as peat moss and com- posted manure. All of these help retain moisture and retard weed growth and should eliminate the need to use chemical fertilizers.
