Several of the highlights: Grand- parents Day, which included special entertainment, an Open House and a luncheon served by the grade three and four classes ("en francais' no less!) A Chris- tian Book Fair was held a couple of days later, with tapes and videos as well. The week ended with Talent Night, an evening in which an amazing variety of Port Perry fo host CWY again This summer, during the months of August, September, and October, the Port Perry area will once again host a group of 14 youths, aged 17-20, from Canada and Thailand on a Canada World Youth exchange programme. The 3 month stay in the area will be the first leg of a 6 month learning experience, with the second stage taking place in Thailand. Last year, Port Perry hosted the Ecuador exchange. The positive response from the com- munity and participants has brought us back for a second year. We hope to involve people that were not able to participate last year. The seven young Canadians have been selected from across Canada to participate in the ex- change and will be accompanied by a qualified staff person or 'group leader' who will be responsible for the group. Their Thai counterparts will be chosen by the Government of Thailand's Ministry of the Interior, Com- munity Development Depart- ment. The Thai participants are involved with model dairy pro- jects in their own communities. Canada World Youth is a . private, non-profit organization funded by the Canadian Interna- tional Development Agency, which has sponsored youth ex- changes with various developing nations for the past 19 years. Dur- ing 1990, eighteen country pro- jects will take place in different regions in Canada. The pro- gramme is intended to foster cross-cultural communication and a growing awareness of social and economic issues both in Canada and abroad. Thailand has one of the fastest growing economies in Southeast Asia. Situated between Burma, Laos and Kampuchea, Thailand is often considered a tropical paradise by European tourists. Thais are quite proud of their in- dependence and democratic traditions, especially since Thailand was never colonized. Rice, rubber, petroleum and tourism form the basis of the Thai economy. Thai is the main language 'of the country. When the group leader arrives in the community at the end of May, he or she will be looking for seven farm families interested in hosting one Canadian and one Thai in their home. The par- ticipants are to be treated as family members. The cost of their food and lodging will be covered by C.W.Y. The participants will work with the farm families and do some volunteering with local groups in the area. The kindergarten class had a special craft for the parents on Talent Night: each child had his/her own life-size paper doll, sitting place at the desks, stuffed with newspapers and coloured to match each child's clothing. What fun. The week following Christian Education week was relatively quiet, and productive. The children have begun counting by twos, and in language they are learning both the long and short vowel sounds. They are also beginning the memorization of Psalm 150. m The grade one and two class continues their study on plants, by planting their own flowers and watching the wonderful miracle of growth take place. In Bible, they looked at apostle Paul's con- version and two of his journeys. The class trip has been planned for June 8 - at that time we hope to go to Toronto Island! The third grade has had fun as they practiced giving change, in math. Grade four began two digit multiplication and division, and the fifth grade began a unit on geometry. The whole class has done well memorizing the 10 com- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, May 15, 1990 -- 17 mandments and sharing with each other the summaries they made concerning different sec- tions of the Bible. The class is also practising three times a week for the upcoming track and field day. Last week, they looked at the cir- culatory system, studying the heart, arteries, veins, capillaries and how to take care of them. The senior class is beginning a unit on New France, and in Phys Ed they are training hard for the May 30 track & field day, and learning some baseball skills. On Wednesday the grade eight class left for Quebec City, with Mrs. uuetter and Mrs. Rance. Mrs. House taught grades six and seven while they were gone, and on Friday she took them to the Science Center for the day! It is a very busy but also a very en- joyable time of the year! Our Spring Membership meeting and pot luck supper is coming up May 15 at 6:45 - at that meeting, three new board members will be elected. Our Talent Auction is slated for May 25 at the Greenbank Hall - last year we raised $10,000.00 at this event - we hope to top that amount this year!
