ee EHH HHH HTT He R25 IE ETS Colin Wiatrzyk placed fourth at the National Bantam Wres- tling Championships held ear- lier this month in Regina, Sas- katchewan. Colin is a Grade 7 student at S.A. Cawker Public School , and is a second year wrestler. There were eight wrestlersin Colin's weight class that were divided into two pools. The first and second finishers in each pool advanced to the medal round. Colin lost his first match to the Ontario champion, and the eventual gold medallist. Colin's second match was against an opponent from Prince Edward Island. Colin went ahead 5-1in points in this match before pin- hing his opponent for the victo- ry. He won his third match by a default. This put Colin into the finals, and pitted him against an oppo- nent from Alberta. Colin was leading 14-3 when an unluck: break caused him to be pinned. and he had to settle for fourth place. He qualified for the Ontarion team, by winning the gold med- al in the Durham Region finals, and the silver at the Provincial championships. He described his experience at the nationals as "scary", but he thinks he did well. "I didn't really think I would make it that far. It was a lot of fun, and I learned a lot from watchingothers," he said. Colin stated he began wres- tling because everyone else was. He was actively involved in karate, and soccer at the time, but has since given both up toconcentrate on wrestling. Colin also said he will contin- ue with wrestling next year, and carry on throughout high school. "Hopefully I will go (to the Nationals) again next year," he said. If he doesn't, his coach, Rob- ert Byers said it wouldn't be for Er _--_ Toe i i alack of trying. Mr. Byers stated that Colin worked hard, and when he was taught a move, he not only used itin practice, but tried it during amatch. "He is very coachable, he lis- tens, and puts what he learns to use. He thinks about what he has been taught, and tries to improve upon it himself," he said. He added that Colin definite- ly has a lot of potential for a wrestling future. The Nationals were a three- day event that took place from May3-6. His trip was sponsored by the S.A. Cawker Advisory Committee, the Rotary Club of Port Perry, the Kinsmen Club of Port Perry, and S.A. Cawker Public School. He also received support, and invaluable point- ers from Ted Jensen, wrestling coach at Port Perry High School.
