ro Cn Durham Riding backs Cunningham ; DURHAy EAST Yor: : RESULTS CUNNINGHAM DIANNE HARRIS Tories elect Durham East MPP Sam Cureatz and riding association president June Smith at the leadership voting station in Bowmanville Saturday afternoon. Durham East Conserva- tives threw thelr support lightly behind Dianne Cunningham who lost to Mike Harris when the province wide tally was completed. (see story) That garden weasle held by Mr. Cu- reatz was his purchase at a fund-raising auction held as the vote was taking place. London MPP Dianne Cun- ningham was the winner in the riding of Durham East, but it wasn't nearly enough to give her the leadership of the Con- servative Party of Ontario. Mrs. Cunningham collect- ed 123 votes from card-carrying Conservatives in this riding, while her opponent Mike Har- ris, the eventual winner of the 'leadership race, collected 109 votes. There were 460 card carry- ing Conservatives eligible to vote in Durham East riding, but only about half (232) turned out to cast ballots at the Bowman- ville Sports Complex on Satur- day afternoon. That was about the same as the province-wide turn-out, as just under half the 33,000 eligi- ble voters did so in this new and unique method of choosing a party leader. Harris, the 45 year old MPP from North Bay was the eventual easy winner over Mrs. Gunningham, who first won a seat in the Legislature in a 1987 by-election. Harris takes over the lead- ership reins of the provincial Conservatives from Andy Brandt, who stepped down as interim leader. Rather than hold a leader- ship convention, the provincial Conservatives decided to allow all members one vote. PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, May 15, 1990 -- 5 ridings in Ontario. Card carrying Conserva- tives (in good standing as of March 19) were eligible to vote. Results were counted at each of the ridings, and then for- warded to election headquar- ters in Toronto where the votes were converted on a per centage basis to "points out of 100" for the leadership candidates. This is the firat time a ma- jor party in Canada has used this "one member-one vote" sys- tem to select a new leader. In an interview with the Star while voting was taking place Saturday afternoon in Bowmanville, Durham East MPP Sam Cureatz said he per- sonally likes this sytem. It does away with the in- tense kind of lobbying delegates are under at leadership conven- tions. And he said the concept of "one member-one vote" is more democratic. However, Cureatz admit- ted the system is "cumbersome" and will need some wrinkles ironed out if the Party uses it again. ) But several Conservatives mentioned that voting in, this fashion doesn't generate the Harris new leader kind of public interest and ex- citement that a leadership con- vention does with speeches and full-blown media coverage. Cureatz personally threw his support behind Mrs. Cun- ningham, saying he agrees with her stance on several issues. With a fall election looming in Ontario, Durham East Con- servatives will get together May 31 at the Oddfellows Hall in Port Perry for their nomina- tion meeting. Cureatz said he will be seeking the nomination. To date, there are no other candi- dates who have indicated they will challenge him. As for what the issues might be if Ontario goes to polls in the fall, Cureatz indicated that federal issues like the Meech Lake aftermath, and the GST are going to find their way into the provincial campaign. As Durham East Conserva- tives were voting last Saturday afternoon, entertainment was provided by the Golden Slip- pers musical group from Scugog Island. And an auction was held to raise money for the expected election in the fall. WANTED DEAD or ALIVE HAVE YOU MET HIM?
