26 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Wednesday, May 23, 1990 Survey shows alcohol use down among teenagers Ontario high school students report that they're saying "no" to drugs, cigarettes and alcohol more often than they did 10 years ago, according to the latest survey by the Addiction Research Foyndation. ¥ The survey of about 4,000 students, aged 12 to 19 years, is the seventh in a series. Surveys are conducted in alternate years. The survey found that 23.3 per- cent reported using tobacco in 1989, compared with 34.7 percent in 1979. Two-thirds of students reported using alcohol compared with 76.3 percent in 1977. Reported use of illegal drugs is also down significantly since the late 1970s. Also, more students reported using no drugs at all, including alcohol and tobacco - 29.2 percent in 1989 compared with 17.4 per- cent in 1979. For the first time the survey asked about use of injection and performance-enhancing drugs. Just over one percent reported us- ing steroids at least once and 0.2 percent said they were injection drug users who share needles. ARF scientist Dr. Reginald Smart says the reported drop in drug use is encouraging but leaves "no room for complacen- cy. Even low percentages of drug use represent a large number of students." "If we look at the entire (Cana- dian) student population from grade seven to 13, one percent or 8,800 have used crack. 0.4 percent or 3,500 use cannabis daily and 0.7 percent or 6,180 sought medical help for their drug use," he says. The researchers feel the survey's results - that drug use among students is decreasing - is reliable even though it is based on students' self-reporting, Smart says. For one thing, the survey contained trick 'control' questions to trip up falsifiers. For another thing, other studies have shown that adolescents tend if anything to exaggerate their use of drugs, he adds. (Canadian Science News) Brock 4-H club news The Brock 4-H Breadventure club has completed all its meetings and have had fun bak- ing and sampling many of the pro- ject recipes e.g. basic white bread, soft pretzels, refrigerator crescent rolls and chelsea buns. Our Achievement Program was held Monday, April 30th at 7:00 p.m., at Sunderland United Church with over 65 members, parents and visitors present. We joined with the Sunderland 4-H Breadventure club and the Sunderland Women's Institute who very generously sponsors both 4-H clubs. Lorna Durward, Youth Leader for the Brock club, acted as master of ceremonies for the evening. Mr. Rick DeJong, Sunderland entertained the crowd with his humerous bread-baking demonstration. Sandra Campbell, Rural Organizations Specialist for Durham West, presented awards to all club members with the special 6 project award being presented to Mary Lynn Hill of the Sunderland club. Mrs. Barb Doble, leader of the Sunderland club, received her 5 year Leaders Certificate. Congratulations to both Mary Lynn and Mrs. Doble and to all members who com- pleted another 4-H project. Members will be notified over the summer of the next project to begin in the fall.
