12 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday; May 29, 1990 Port Perry High School students experience hands-on' how fo work with children Grade 11 students at Port Perry High School are learning to work with children, not only in written material but in the practical sense. As part of a new course imple- mented this year at the high school, the students of the Pa- renting and Child Care classes are holding a playschool for two weeks: The new course is a brain- child of the Family Studies de- partment to give the students hands-on experience with young children. "It gives the students a chance to practice their creativ- ity, and to learn about the dif- ferent development stages of different aged children," said Shelley Davy, child care teach- er. The children at the play- school are aged 2-5, currently there are 8 enrolled, but accord- ing to Joan Quail, parenting course teacher between 15-20 children would be ideal. "The more children there are involved, the better it is for the students," she said. SYD . . Keep yourself informed..... The children take part in col- oring, crafts, games, singing, and storytime activities. The children are also learn- ing small muscle control, and the older ones, large muscle skills. "The students learn how to organize games and activities, according to age levels," Mrs. Quail stated. Many of these students will go on into the Co-operative Ed- ucation program next year, and many of these students will take jobs in the Early Child- hood Education field. Many have also decided on taking the course at Durham College. The playschool started last week and will be a two week project. It will run four days a week, with one session in the af- ternoon, and one in the morn- ing. This is the practical part of the years study. The students have been learning the basics through reading material in class, to prepare for the hgnds- on experience. Mrs. Quail stated that the program is going very well and is hoping that it becomes a yearly program. If it does she stated it will be held earlier in May next year.
