"WOW" is coming to Port Perry by Connie Stephenson, Program Co-ordinator A follow up program is being planned for "WOW" in the fall along with a wide range of old and new programs. We are really excited about the new WOW program in Port and would like to see some of it's benefits continue into the year. Consequently, the Y is trying to develop a 10 or 12 week program In co-operation with the Youth Employment Services that will in- corporate some aspects of the program or perhaps run the en- tire program again in the winter. News of this will be printed in the YMCA brochure as well as in the Star in September, so watch for it then. The rest of the fall line-up looks pretty excitng too with programs to meet a variety of community needs. Here's a sneak preview of some programs that might be of interest to you. The Co-op ""Playschool"' will be back and will run from September to June, mornings and afternoons with snack, playtime, circletime and crafts too. Our Playschool is similar to "Nursery School" and is run by ECE's but the parent involvement helps to keep costs down and promotes the co-operation the YMCA likes to develop in its programs. Our popular preschool pro- grams will be back as well and will feature topics like, "Marvellous Me," (self-esteem), "Letting Loose with Mother Goose' (stories and songs), "Let's Pretend" (all about future careers) and "Tiny Tots" (mom and tot social). Depending on the enrolment, these classes may run in the afternoons as well as in the mornings. This past year, our gymnastics and dance classes became well established and next .year we want to contimye these programs but with a little different format. We are planning a continuous pro- gram for the year, from September to June with some light competition for the par- ticipating areas. This is all in fun of course, with the stress on sport- smanship and individual endeavors while the program re- mains open togall newcomers. Floor hockey will also follow this general plan although the teams are usually formed in the RR -- fall sign up. We are loking for- ward to seeing these programs running for all ages this fall both in Port Perry and in Blackstock. There is Keyboarding and After-School programs for school- age kids in Port Perry and for the teens there is the Babysitting course, Stage Struck and hopeful- ly some volleyball or basketball. Adult courses include the popular Workout, Jazzercize, Floor Hockey, Volleyball, Parenting and Craft-tea. You may also see EE. some specialty programs offered this fall related to the various Ser- Yiess and Associations in the area tw Cover Tone! the socia issues and interests. Myre ideas come in all the time for new pro- grams, but if you see a need in the area to be covered, give us a call at the Y to see if there is anything we can do to help.~ Looking forward to seeing-you in the fall, and don't forget the Y Summer Camp in Uxbridge star- ting in July! David Ritchie, aged 91 DAVID RITCHIE Nov.26 1898 - May 8 1990 David was the 5th of seven children born to Samuel and Joanna Ritchie in Glasgow Scotland. When he was 4 yrs., his mother died and his father sent the children to their Grand- parents farm in Ireland. It was there that David developed a great love of the country and for animals. His love and enjoyment of life was revealed by the pranks he played on family and neighbours. At the age of 14 he left his belov- ed Ireland to work in Glasgow with his father. At the outbreak of W.W.1. when he was 16 he ran off and joined the Argyle Sutherland Highlanders. Just betore his 17th birthday he was wounded in France, but on recovery from his wounds, David again volunteered for army duty. He was reassign- ed to the 7th Hussars and served in India till 1919. Upon his return to Ireland he met Agnes Boyd and married her in 1921. The same year he enlisted in the Irish Guard and served with them in the Eastern Mediteranean until his honourable discharge in 1924. Unable to find employment in Ireland, David again returns to Scotland with his wife and baby daughter May. He found employ- ment with the Beatty Bread Co. A second daughter was born to David and Agnes in 1933. David was an active church member serving as an Flder for Gillespie Presby. Church. Finally in 1961 he was able to return to live in the small village of Market Hill where he indulged in his love of gardening. Sadly in 1966 upon the death of Agnes, David again reluctantly left Ireland to join his daughters in Canada. In the 24 yrs. he spent in Canada, he great- ly enriched his family's lives, and his many friends are left with fond memories and many stories of a person who lived his life in full.
