32 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, June 5, 1990 Another season of soccer gets underway Last week saw the return of summer soccer action to Scugog. In a very well organized fashion, the children and their parents were directed to the Scugog Arena, where stations were set up at different times for each age group to get together with their teammates, pick up their uniforms and meet the coaches. The local Judo club did extremely well at the South West Ontario Michigan Invitational recently. Over 160 competitors participated in the junior tournament held In Windsor. Pic- tured are local winners (bottom, from left) Todd Parry, first; Alex Jansen, first; (behind) Russell Whitehead, first; Conrad Spunde, first; and Mike Wright, second. With this method, team lists were posted inside the door, so that, upon arrival, it was simple to find the player's name and pro- ceed to the number assigned to that team, which was prominent- ly displayed in the bleachers. This year's executive should be con- gratulated at handling such a large volume of players, coaches and parents in such an efficient manner. This year's soccer enrollment is up greatly from prior years. A re- cent article in the Toronto daily papers stated that soccer has passed over hockey as the most popular team sport for young peo- plein Canada, and this definitely seems to be the case in Scugog. The huge popularity of soccer is due to a number of reason - it is a good team sport, it provides a great physical workout, it is quite simple to master the necessary rules and skills, and there is no huge equipment expense involved. Soccer has become so popular in Scugog that the soccer club has been forced to appeal to potential team sponsors to come forward again at this time. There are still teams in the league that require - a sponsor to help in offsetting their operating expenses. If you or your firm or organization would be willing to sponsor a team for the 1990 season, please contact Barry Johnston of Sport- sland at 985-2174 and let him know as soon as possible. Select team tryouts will begin this week at the soccer fields. The select teams are made up of players from the house league teams who are "selected" for their good playing skills to repre- sent the Scugog Youth Soccer Club at a variety of tournaments held during the summer. There is an additional cost to the players who are selected, which covers the cost of the tournament entry fees and the Select team uniforms, which will be a bit showier than the house league uniforms, and which the select team members will be allowed to keep when the season is finished. Try-out times for the Mosquito Team (for player.12 years of age and under) will begin tonight, Tuesday June 5, at 6:30 p.m. at the soccer field. The Atom selects (for players 10 and under) prac- tice on Thursday June 7 at 6:30, and the Squirt selects for those 8 vears of age and under) will hold their first try-out tonight, Tues. June 5 at 7:30 p.m. at the soccer fields. If more information is re- quired, speak to your house league coach. } The soccer executive would like to take this opportunity to thank the people who gave their time to work at the refreshment trailer at the soccer field during the All On- tario Rugby tournament which was held at the soccer fields last week. A special mention goes to Rob Newcombe, Linda Palleske, and Mr. and Mrs. Ron Cosway for the time they put in during this tournament. Also a special thank you to all the house league sponsors who have come forward to help us begin another great season in such a positive manner, and a final reminder that we are still in need of sponsors to complete the rosters for the 1990 season. Der- rick Roberts blocked a number of hard shots on net for Team 9. Mike Dalby's defensive work was notable as was the hard work of Rhea Baxter and the two way play of Paul Chiusalo for the Snoden side. Despite the fact that the teams had but one practise and some players were playing their first games ever, the level of play and sportsmanship was high. All players should be proud of a great opening week. 1 kg. (2.2 Ib) HONEY No. 1 White Liquid or Creamed 3 or 6°55 Mm&Minan ORCHARDS HWY. 2 between Ajax & Whitby OPENS THURSDAY, JUNE 7th Mon. - Fri.
