This will give you a very smooth, professionally finished look- ing floor. Next vacuum the floor again thoroughly to remove as much dust as possible. Then, remove the final ~~ 'RIDGE - oo a residue of dust before ap- plying the finish, To do this, wrap a terrycloth towel around a broom and moisten with alcohol or kerosene. Wipe the corners, edges and gaps in the floor, as well as open spaces. Any dust left will be caught in the finish coats. It's a good idea to seal a wood floor on the same day that you give it the final sanding. Sealers can be RTH PORT PERRY PLAZA (a16) 985-9777 FAX 985-9161 clear, tinted or wood hues or even coloured. No matter which type you choose, it is important to note that ex- cess sealer that does not penetrate into the wood must be removed, or it will leave dark splotches that obscure the wood. If you use rags, apply sealer sparing- ly and wipe away any residue. There are so many dif- ferent sealers and finishes available, that you may want to try out the sealer in an inconspicuous spot. The most common sealers are penetrants. They are absorbed by the wood and seal the pores of the grain against moisture and dirt. Plastic sealers such as polyurthanes are commonly used on wood floors underneath addi- tional coats because they are easy to apply and can be Member Oshawa & District Real Estate Board Member Lindsay & District Real Estate Board -- and -- All Points Relocation A referral network of Independent Brokers Across Canada and the United States OPEN HOUSE. Stain- sealers tone or stain the wood, and semi-seal it at the same time. Some provide a matte finish and require no additional surface coats. Other types cover with a compatible surface finish. Oils, another type of sealer, are readily absorbed by the wood and provide a soft, natural finish. Oils, however, do not last long, and may attract dust and dirt. They are also incom- patible with other finished. Remember, once you have oiled a floor, you will have to stick with your choice. After a sealer dries, you will need to buff it with no. 2 steel wool. For larger rooms you can rent a buf- fer. A buffing machine re- quires a steady hand. Start in the middle of the room to avoid banging into walls un- til you get used to it. Do the corners by hand with a scrap of steel wool. Now you are ready to apply the finish wax of plastic floor finish. Make sure you read the manufac- turer's specifications. Work slowly, and brush or roll the finish with the grain. Apply at least two coats, with a light buffing of steel wool between them. Like sealers, there are many surface finishes to . heat or choose from, each with its own qualities in terms of durability, renewability and a particular finished look. They do, however, all pro- vide a hard, protective sur- face over colour stains. Shellac finishes are durable, though they do show scratches. Shellac goes on easily, spreads evenly and dries quickly. It seals wood pores and can be touched up. However, it has little resistance to water alcohol. Polyurthane, on the other hand, is a hard durable plastic finish which is im- pervious to water, heat, alcohol and chemicals. Under normal heavy traffic it will stay without chipping or cracking and it is fairly easy to apply. Some people prefer var- nish because it dries hard, withstands moisture and can be buffed to a high gloss. Its main drawback is that it is easily damaged by heat and must be applied when the room temperature is 70 degrees. Lacquer is a quick- drying, heatproof, water- resistant finish which can be rubbed to a matte or ° glossy lustre. It can be sprayed on or applied by brush to give a beautiful, finished look.
