OGH receives health approval Oshawa General Hospital has recently been allocated $22 million from the Ministry of Health for some of its capital needs, along with approval to pro- ceed to the next stage of planning, for the redevelopment of the hospital. Functional programm- ing determines exactly what space, staffing and equipment are required in each department scheduled for renovation or rebuilding. 'As the key regional referral centre in Durham Region, we are very pleased to have our health care needs recognized, and to pro- ceed with our building plans," says Don Thornton, Chairman of the hospital's Board of Gover- nors. "The hospital received the fullest endorsement of its plans by all other Durham Region hospitals and we are pleased that the Minister has moved rapidly on the approval of the redevelop- ment. We look forward to working with her staff, the District Health Council, Durham Hospitals and health care agencies," added Thornton. Phase I of the redevelopment involves construction of a new wing to contain a new emergen- cy department, expanded am- bulatory care services and replacing existing paediatric units, labour/delivery/birthing suites and nconatal unit. Phase 11, a new wing to house intensive care services, is scheduled to follow the construc- tion of the first phase to be com- pleted in 1995. The hospital will continue to work according to the Ministry Planning process to meet the required service needs in Durham Region. As well, Phase II includes a new intensive care unit and recovery facilities. Remodelling of existing service areas are included in Phases I and II. The renovations and addi- tions will take more than six years to complete, according to Thornton, including alterations to improve traffic flow and provide parking facilities. As the key referral centre in Durham Region, Oshawa General has a close working relationship with the region's District Health Council and other Durham UXBRIDGE MEMORIAL hospitals in developing its building plans to ensure that regional needs are addressed, along with strengthened com- munity services. The hospital has applied to be designated by the Ministry of Health as the Cancer Treatment Centre for area East of Metropolitan Toronto, in which case some elements of the redevelopment will be integrated with the cancer care program. It was held at Blackstock Recreation Centre. Registration was at 12:30 p.m. after which a light lunch and a time for visiting was held. A VCR was set with a movie for the young people. They enjoyed this while the older ones enjoyed singing many favorite songs led by Maryllis Dongelmans as she accompanied them on her accordian. Bruce Stephenson then showed several interesting slides of Nor- thern Canada where they lived for several years. The day had then cooled down some and games and races were started for the young people. The highlight was the judging of the hats which the young people had made at home and brought with them. There was a prize for the prettiest - won by Lisa Salterman For the most unusual - won by Darren Hartwick. For the fun- niest - won by Andrea Wright. A business meeting was held during which an "In Memoriam"' for the following people took place.
