Starting in August, Amea Wilbur, 20, will spend six months in Quebec and Brazil. © She will be part of a group of 14 oun ple -- seven from Can- 4h Lx seven from the ex- change country Brazil. The group's first stop will be in Quebec. Participants will live with local families and be involved in volunteer work pro- jects. In November, the group will depart for Brazil and per- form similar tasks. The Canadi- an contingent will return home inMarch. The CWY program is not un- known to many Scugog Town- ship residents. Last year, the township hosted a group from Canada and Ecuador, and this year families will welcome ex- change participants from Can- ada and Thailand. CWY is a non-governmental, non-profit organization which operates educational youth ex- changes between Canada and developing countries in Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Caribbean. Now in its nineteenth year of operation, the program has in- volved over 36 exchange coun- tries with a total of over 7,400 participants. The program was started by a group of Canadian citizens concerned about the role of youth in contemporary society - - a society where there is a growing need for people to de- velop tolerance an age to values and ways of life which are foreign to them in order for development to occur. The CWY program provides the opportunity for both partici- pants and community members AMEA WILBUR to aeveiop a heightened aware- ness of the -ealities of life in the Third World and in another part of Canada.
