Arbitrator awards 6.1% increase to R.C. teachers A provincially appointed arbitrator has awarded high school teachers with the Dur- ham Catholic Board a salary in- crease of 6.1 per cent in each year of a two year contract. The report, handed down last week calls for the increase in 1989-90 and 1990-91. It will push the maximum salary to $59,344 for the up- coming school year. And the number of steps to reaching maximum salary has been reduced from 13 to 11. The arbitrator was ap- pointed last February when the Catholic Board and its teachers reached a contract agreement after a strike closed schools in the Region. Both sides agreed to refer the issue of salaries to the arbi- tration board. Principals will receive the. same 6.1 per cent wage hikes plus an additional $1,000 ad- Jjustment. In a statement released last week, the Durham Catholic Board said it was pleased with the arbitrator's decision on wage increases, but not happy with the adjustments in the grid structure. And the statement said the Board is also "disappointed that the arbitrator did not rec- ognize ability to pay as a con- tributing factor and that this will affect future negotiations for all school boards with a low community assessment base." Both members of the arbi- tration board representing the school board and the teachers dissented from the decision and wrote a minority report. Tax benefit unjustified To the Editor: All considered, we assume our P.C. representative Mr. Steven- son will vote against or not accept the unjust increase in 30% tax free benefits. How much more can we permit our so called elected represen- tatives to be so divorced from reality. The everyday struggle of the people he and his like are sup- posed to speak for. Do they or he, have no shame or are they only there to take everything they can including free plane rides for his wife in- cluded. He must feel ashamed.
