Sophie, a black and tan Do- berman, weighing in at 55 pounds is the prize dog of Nel- son and Joanne Coish. Simca's Exotic Dream, (So- phie's registered name) attend- ed the Canadian Champion- ships last weekend in Peterborough, and was crowned the Canadian Champ, as well as earning her CD (Companion Dog) on Canada Day. Sophie, born on January 28, 1989, attended her first show on September 30, 1989, and has since compiled an impres- sive list of awards. Sophie isen- tered in the open or senior pup categories in shows, and her awards include: best puppy in a show, best puppy in a group, two best puppy in breed, one best of winners, three best of opposite sex, four winners, eight reserve winners, eleven first place in class, and five sec- ond place in class. Second place is the worst that Sophie has ever finished. After searching three local kennels that are registered with the Doberman Club of Canada the Coishs purchased Sophie from Simca-Kennels, in Nobleton. Mr. Coish stated he chose to buy a dog from Simca Kennels mainly because they do not sell TYPEWRITER Bey Proud owners Nelson and Joanne Coish show off Cana- dian Champion "Sophie". Although the Coishs were originally looking for a pet, it was a condition of the sale that they try and make "Simca's Ex- otic Dream" a Canadian Cham- pion, as they thought she had the potential. To qualify for the Canadian Championships, a dog must have accumulated 10 points at different shows, and must qual- ify under three different judg- es. Sophie received her first points (5) in Toronto in Decem- ber 1989, and additional points in Oshawa, and Peterborough competitions. Sophie has competed in Graf- ton, Toronto, Kitchener, Fer- gus, Thornhill, Oshawa, and Peterborough. She is shown by either John Griffith, or by her breeders from Simca Kennels Lana Sni- derman, and Bob Krol. At the Canadian Champion- ships Sophie picked up two i firsts, one second, one reserve winner, one best of winners, and two best of opposite sex. There are two main types of shows, confirmation, and obedi- 'ence. Confirmation involves ap- pearance and body structure of the dog. They are judged on such things as the shape of the head, how the eyes are set, teeth, ears, body forequarters, hindquarters, paw position and body movement when they iy. Sophie has walked away with the best bitch award in this division three times. Sophie did not qualify in the obedience division until this past June. She has two more obedience phases, entitled Dog Excellence, and Companion Dog to complete. Sophie has gone as far as the Coishs are taking her in the confirmation division. She could be shown as a champ in the "Special Category', or com- pete in the United States, but that type of competition is very bifng consuming, Mr Coish stat- ed. Dogs are judged in seven dif- ferent classes, eventually hav- ing winners pitted against win- ners. The seven classes include working, which is Sophies' class, sporting, non sporting, hounds, terriers, toys, and herding. Sophie herself comes from a long line of champions. Not only does her grandfather grace the cover of the Winter '89 issue of DQ (Doberman Quarterly), but inside one can find Sophie, her grandmother, mother (Sim- ca's April Wine, American, Ca- nadian Champ), father (Arco dob Mann, American Champi- on), brother (Canadian Champ), and her sister. As for the champion blood line being extended, Mr. Coish added that breeding plans for the future for Sophie have al- ready been arranged through Simca Kennels. ge ug NOW ON VIDEO THE MONT ACCLAIMED FILM OF THE YEAR!
