To last, these important surfaces have to be strong, durable and resistant to just about everything from heat, to ink, to strong acid clean- ing solutions. By far the most common material used today for kit- chen and bathroom counter- tops is plastic laminate. Best known by the trade names Arborite and For- mica, plastic laminate con- sists of many layers of paper bounded together with plastic. The top layer can be col- ored or patterned in a myriad of designs, in- cluding photographic reproduction of actual wood veneer. A clear, protective layer of tough plastic is ap- plied over this. After being bonded under heat and pressure, the standard laminate panel is about 1.15 mm thick. It's characteriz- ed by a distinctive dark edge. Because plastic laminate is versatile, inexpensive, reasonably easy to work with, bendable and getting better looking and more durable every year, it is still one of the best choices in countertop materials. But there are still limita- tions. Plastic laminate is easily marred, subject to wear, difficult to repair and has poor heat resistance. Also, you cannot cut direct- ly on its surface since, in most cases, it can be easily cut or nicked. A number of new materials for countertops are now surfacing that are strong and remarkably resistant to abrasion and other wear and tear. One new product is color- through laminate which is similar to plastic laminate except that all the layers are imprinted with color. Cuts and nicks are less visi- ble than on plastic laminate, it has no dark edge, many decorative edge treatments are possible, it comes in many colors and it is fairly inexpensive. On the down side, color- through laminate is not yet available in patterns or tex- tures, can't be bent, still has poor heat resistance, and its surface should not be direct- ly cut on. Thick, solid surface countertop materials are available that are extreme- ly durable, resistant and can last a lifetime. Some of the more popular trade names are Avonite, Corian and Fountainhead. These are moulded materials comprised of natural minerals and resins. They have a richer ap- pearance, are easily reparable, have good heat resistance, come in stone- like designs and can be enhanced with a variety of decorative edge treatments. The only problem is that they are difficult to handle for the do-it-yourselfer, come in limited colors and are fairly expensive. A new product called FormStone is now being in- troduced by Avonite as a thin version of the solid sheet material. The new product is less expensive, lighter and more versatile. While it has the same ap- pearance of depth and is easily reparable, this solid laminate is more like plastic laminate in its workability. Although not generally available yet, products like this may soon provide another option to standard countertop materials. Ceramic tiles and wood are still used occasionally as countertop materials.
