But as a countertop material, although gaining in popularity, they have cer- tain limitations. While at- tractive and extremely durable, the grouting can be areal nuisance. They must be regrouted and resealed every couple of years. Also, there is a limited selection of ceramic tiles that can be used to create a countertop surface. And keep in mind that dishes and glasses will shatter and break easily on a ceramic surface. On the plus side, ceramic tiles are extremely heat resistant, you can cut directly on the surface and they can be installed over some existing countertop surfaces. Butcher block -- layers of hard maple or oak Kiln- dried and bonded together -- is still a good option for kit- chen countertops. It comes in approximately four centimetre-thick slabs which can be easily installed. While wood is more ex- pensive than plastic laminates or ceramic tiles, it can last a lifetime, is more durable, has good heat resistance and can be directly cut on. There are some disadvan- tages: wood countertops re- quire periodic sealing and extra care to keep clean. They can also darken and stain easily.
