Seniors apt. project OK'd A proposal to build a 38 unit senior citizens apartment building in Port Perry got a big boost forward Monday when council agreed to pass the nec- essary zoning by-law. But the vote was not unani- mous, as two councillors contin- ue to express reservations about the project proposed for land behind the Immaculate Conception Church and School on Highway 7A. Councillors Marilyn Pearce and Yvonne Christie both said they are concerned that the site is not large enough and there is an overall shortage of parking spaces for the combined school and church use. However, the motion to support the necessary zoning amendment was approved by councillors Neil Hunter, Glenn Malcolm, Don Cochrane and Al Goreski. Mayor Howard Hall didn't cast a vote, but said after the meeting he completely supports the action taken by his council. He said he wanted the is- sue put to a vote Monday "one way or another" so the Catholic Archdiocese of Toronto (which Police find father and son, lost overnight on Scugog An early morning search of . While the police boat was searching the northern end of Lake Scugog, an officer on the dock spotted the missing bass boat through binoculars. With the aid of the Port Perry Mari- na staff, the police were able to reach the boat which was situ- ated between the Causeway, and Portview Beach. According to police the pair had motor trouble, and when unable to make it to shore, took refuge under a tarpin the boat. They were brought to shore at approximately 9:20 a.m. The motor is believed to have "given out" on another point on the lake, sending the boat adrift over the night. The project has been on the books in Scugog for the last sev- eral years, and has been the subject of numerous council and public meetings and an Ontario Municipal Board hearing. While council gave its ap- proval on Monday, the resolu- tion says that formal passing of the by-law will be subject to a "letter of undersanding" be- tween the Township, the Arch- diocese and the Durham Separ- ate School Board, to address such things as joint use of park- ing areas; the addition of more parking spaces, measures to drain rear yards of homes on Ash Street, and a wooden fence to buffer Ash Streets residences from the church and school parking lot. These issues were dis- cussed in length Monday by representatives of the Archdio- cese and the council. The project has received approval for provincial funding, but Archdiocese rep David Finnegan said that as more time passes, that funding could beinjeopardy. He said there is a waiting list now of 180 seniors who would like to move in once the building is finished, and he urged council to give the Archdi- ocese a decision Monday on whether the by-law would be approved. He indicated that construc- tion on the non-profit, non- denominational building could get underway next spring.
