ere rr -- rere Tennis camp teaches kids about the sport "Tennis Camp" is a lot more than learning how to properly grip the racket. The Junior Summer Tennis Program isin its eighth yearin Port Perrv, and children are coming back each year for more. The program runs for three week, in which the children learn the basics of proper ten- nis play, and are tested on their performance to obtain badges. This years program is cur- rently in its third week, with 53 local children learning from four qualified instructors. There are a variety of differ- ent skill levels they are tested on to reach the Tournament badge, which is the highest they can achieve. The children begin by learn- ing to correctly handle their racket by bouncing the ball up and down on it, then continue on to forehands, backhands, service toss, serving motion, serving, overhead smashes, vol- leys, lobs, and placement of the all. They must also learn the rules of conduct, how to keep score etc., to earn additional badges as their performance improves. rganizer, Diane Burt, states that the children have a good time as well as learning about the game of tennis. Many come back each year to try for higher badges and we have turned out some players who reached and completed the tournament badge, she added. Along with Mrs. Burt, the children are instructed by Alex Pilepic, Jay Neill, and Jeff Mur- ray. There are games and drills "for the three weeks, and some of their performances are video- taped, so the chidlren can watch themselves and see what they are doing right, and wrong. At the end of the course there is a tournament for all mem- bers to take part in. The weak- er [Players are teamed up to- gether, as are the stronger players to make the game more fair, and fun. The tennis camp is also sup- plied with Gaterade by the On- tario Tennis Association for the three weeks. The cost for the camp is $50, and is open to children between the ages of 8-16. Greenbank Garden Centre and Lake Scugog Lumber were neck and neck all the way to the last inning. The bats were in constant motion for both teams. Stephen Senyk went 3 for 4 as did Jeffrey Torbotton. Jeffrey also made a tremendous diving fly ball catch to save the inning for Lake Scugog Lumber. Their team also depended on strong fielding from kids such as Anthony Beauchamp. Greenbank Garden Centre had two terrific in- nings - allowing no runs, thanks to the professional fielding of Joel Thomson, Donald Campbell and Tommy Kittle. Those three hard working players also went 5 for 5 in the batters box. Everyone played one of their best games of the season. Greenbank went onto win the game by one run. Final score was 17-16. Way to go teams. IF YOUR AD WAS HERE Over 20,000 people could have read it this week. That's a lot of potential customers for your business.
