24 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, July 24, 1990 Sound takes two from Gamblers Last Thursday night the Green- bank Gamblers made the long trip to Owen Sound for a double header with the Canadian Cham- pion Owen Sound Canadian Tire Team and while the Gamblers put on a spirited performance, in the end it was a case of too much Brad Underwood. The talented Underwood who is rated by many as the best all round ball player in Canada to- day, pitched and batted Owen Sound to a pair of victories by the scores of 5-0 and 5-4. In the opening game of the dou- ble header Underwood pitched a near perfect game as he shut down the Greenbank team by a score of 5-0. Trevor Till managed the only hit off Underwood as he beat out a swinging bunt. Under- wood also blasted a home run in the game much to the delight of the packed stands in the beautiful Owen Sound ball park. Mark Goreski scattered seven hits over the game including home runs to Underwood and Adam Smith and was the victim of some shabby fielding by the Gambler infield which gave Owen FORDER-PARKS INSURANCE BROKERS INC. 34 Water St., Port Perry, Ont. To their credit the Greenbank team never quit and Don Beaton led off the fifth inning with a sharp single and Dave Dickson drew a base on balls. Paul Goreski sacrificed the runners to second the third and John Tait cashed both runners with a triple off the left field fence to tie the score at 4-4. Taits hit just missed going out of the park by inches. With two out in the Owen Sound half of the inning, and with nobody on base, Gambler pitcher Lawrie Williams (who had been sailing along with a two hitter) got a pitch too close to the plate to the dangerous Brad Under- wood and he belted a mammoth home run to deep left field to make the score 5-4 for Owen Sound. Immediately Owen Sound brought Underwood in to pitch the rest of the game to protect the one run lead and with the exception of a seventh inning walk to Don Beaton he shut down the Gambler bats completely. The size of the crowd was astonishing as the big park was jammed to capacity with an estimate of two thousand spec- tators cheering on their home town favorites. Both games were televised in their entirety for showing on the Owen Sound T.V. Station. Softball is alive and well in Owen Sound.! Monday night in Greenbank Park the Gamblers were edged out by Bradford 'Century 21" in a close 3-2 contest. Mark Goreski and Lawrie Williams split the pit- ching duties for Greenbank with "Wild Man" Wilf Diceman throw- ing for Bradford. Each team had six hits during the game and Greenbank had the tying run thrown out at home plate as John Tait tried to score on Don Beatons double off the center field fence. Rod Real led the Gambler at- tack with 3 hits with Dave Dickson, Paul Goreski and Don Beaton rounding out the Green- bank attack. This weekend sees the 'Gamblers in Owen Sound again to compete in the 1.S.C.. East-West Tournament against the Ottawa area teams. Then on the long weekend, the Greenbank squad goes to Waterloo for the 0.A.S.A. Senior Mens elimination Tournament where their first round opponents will be (you guessed it!) The Canadian Champions from Owen Sound. In the meantime, the Gamblers play every Monday night in Greenbank Park at 8:30 p.m. Close game as Heaters win it Perfect Heating and Norm's General Contracting played a fun and exciting game last Tuesday evening. Fielders Jamie Sauter, Mike Piersma and Adam Jacobson each provided the right moves to hold down Philp's runs. Trevor Karkoulas made some great plays in the infield and first baseman Mike Nolan brought in a run with each at bat despite the anticipation of a birthday the next day. Philp Pontiac's Paul Fitchett played a strong game as catcher and at bat. Fielder Sean Roncetti also showed good skill in scoring. Philp's pitcher Kevin Hobbs played a strong game when on the mound. It was an exciting game at the end of a hot day. [OFFICE | FURNITURE Filing Cabinets Desks - Chairs - etc. PORT PERRY STAR 235 Queen Street 985-7383 TT © a I eign, WARE NE
