But before starting on that much-wanted addition, sun deck or other renovation, it's important to know just what building approvals are required. Building approvals or permits are required for almost any renovation -- from a second-story addi- tion, to a sun room, to the in- stallation of plumbing, air conditioning, heating and electrical systems. Always contact the building department of your municipality to determine what other permits and ap- provals you might need, such as demolition permits, minor variances and elec- trical permits. .
