Alcohol a problem on long weekends Anyone who reaches the age of 19 in Ontario is legally entitled to consume alcohol, but not all per- sons are capable of handling the responsibility that comes with the privilege. On a typical holiday weekend, many people choose to ignore the laws related to alcohol and find themselves in trouble. Insp. Bill Wicklund, OPP traf- fic and marine branch, has a reminder: This Civic Holiday weekend, police will again be observing for impaired driving, operating a boat while impaired and consuming alcohol in a public place. _. "Drinking on board a boat is lawful only if the vessel is moored and qualifies as a residence. It must have a washroom as well as eating and sleeping facilities," Insp. Wicklund says. In Ontario, alcohol transported in a vehicle or vessel must be in a closed container, not displayed to public view and not readily ac- cessible. Drinking is not permit- ted at a roadside park, picnic area or at a beach. "The OPP wants everyone who intends to have-an enjoyable holi- day weekend to actually ex- perience one. To ensure this, observance of the law is a must," the Insp. says. The OPP is also issuing a reminder to drivers and passengers to wear their seatbelts. Last Civic Holiday weekend, five of the nine people to die in traffic accidents in- vestigated by the OPP had been ejected from their vehicles. Horse struck by car A horse had to be destroyed after struck by a car on Durham Road 7 (Island Road) shortly af- ter midnight Sunday. Regional Police said a resi- dent of Scugog Island was northbound on the road when his vehicle struck the animal. The driver wasn't hurt. Po- lice Monday morning were at- tempting to locate the owner of the horse and determine how it was wandering loose on a busy Regional Road.
