'The details outlined in this agreement will contribute to an historic exchange of trade, infor- mation and ideas, that will en- courage business between the agriculture and food industries in Ontario and Ukraine,"" Ramsay said. Under the memorandum, joint business undertakings in the area of agricultural-industrial ac- tivities will be possible. Ontario will act as a facilitator in this regard. "This agreement makes good business sense for both Ukraine's and Ontario's agriculture and food industry," Ramsay said. The agreement outlines the in- WEDDING INVITATIONS and ries PORT PERRY STAR 235 Queen Street Port Perry 985-7383 - storage, tentions of Ontario and Ukraine to develop scientific, technical, com- mercial and economic co- operation in the field of agriculture and food production, processing and marketing. It calls for the introduction to Ukraine of new, advanced technologies for cultivating crops and animal products, as well as for joint research. The ministry will assist the committee by introducting On- tario companies involved in resource-saving and no-waste technologies for processing dairy products, meat, fruit, vegetables and agricultural crops. This umbrella agreement facilitates the participation of On- tario businesses in projects which wil lead to improvements in Ukraine's agri-food transporta- tion, storage and packaging systems. Further exchanges of specialists, scientists and trainees are planned. Chulakov arrived in Canada July 20 and will remain until Ju- ly 29. During the visit, staff from the Ministry of Agriculture and Food have arranged tours of numerous agri-food processing operations throughout the province. This year, over 500 kids will take part in the two-week long sessions, and the program gives them a taste of just about everything there is to learn about horses. Shirley Cane operates the summer riding camp, and she said the number one thing the children learn is safety. "We stress this all the time," she told the Star in an in- terview last week. And they also get instruc- tion in grooming, tack, show- manship, feeding, health of horses, how to transport them safely in a trailer, and of course, how to ride. The two week-long pro- grams are so popular that chil- dren come from as far away as Barrie and Toronto. And the two sessions re- maining in August are com- pletely booked up. Each session can take about 50 children (age six and up) under the overall direction of Ms. Cane and eight instruc- tors. While some of the children are skilled riders, and a few own their horses, many have lit- tle or no riding experience when they start the program. "It's a good way for the chil- dren to learn the basics, and it's a good way for parents to find out if their kids are really inter- ested in horses, before they go out and buy one," she explained. And not only do they learn riding and everything that goes - with it, they learn responsibili- ty and self-discipline. "You have to be thinking responsibly all the time when working around animals," said Ms. Cane. horses The children attend the program each weekday morn- ing for two weeks. Hoskin Stables provides the horses, and safety helmets. All the chil- dren need to bring is a healthy attitude and good pair of boots with heels. The children are divided into groups, according to age 'and prior riding skills. The riding is done (under the watchful eye of an instruc- tor) in one of two indoor arenas or on the two outdoor rings. A few of the experienced riders are permitted to ride in the open fields around the farm on Durham Road 57. The cost of the two weeks of instruction is $130 and on the fi- nal day of the program, parents are invited to visit the farm to watch their children demon- strate everything they have learned.
