~ Seeks Kinsmen post (From page 1) position from Jim Burkheart, a Kinsmen from southwestern Ontario. Up to 1,000 voting dele- gates are expected to attend the Thunder Bay Convention. What has Mr. Robinson concerned is that many of these delegates could be holding blocks of proxy votes for Kins- men not present for the conven- tion. He said it's important for him to identify the delegates who hold proxy voting rights, and make sure he gets them on his side when the ballots are fi- nally cast. Mr. Robinson, who is a com- puter teacher at Port Perry High School has been a Kins- men since 1981. He and his wife Vanessa have one son. He agrees that if he is elect- ed vice president, it's a post that is going to require more of his time. And next year, as Nation- al President, the demands will be even greater. When asked why he wants to hold the post as top Kinsmen in Canada, he says there are several reasons. He's totally committed to the organization, said he has derived a lot of satisfaction from his involvement and made "in- stant friends wherever I go in Canada." "I want to put something back into the organization for all it has done for me," he said quietly. His commitment to Kins- * men came early in his first year " inaclub. He recalls delivering Christmas hampers to an apart- mentin Oshawa. There were beer cases stacked to the ceiling and a young ~irl about ten, alone, was baby-sitting her even younger brother. "They were so happy to get the hamper and the toys. I was really touched at that moment and realized then and there that somebody has to help." The Kinsmen motto, he notes is "serving our communi- ty's greatest needs." He's also seeking office for a chance to address some broad- er concerns that are touching the Kinsmen organization from coast to coast. The need for better public relations and communications, and sagging memberships. In- deed, he points out that the Port Perry Club, which had at one time more than 40 members, is now down to 19. There are a number of rea- sons for the drop in members: people don't want to give up their precious free time; people just don't want to "get in- volved," and through the coun- try there seems to be what he called "a loss of a sense of com- munity spirit." In the City of Toronto, for example, there are no Kinsmen Club. They just can't get people involved, there is no sense of community, he said. But he's optimistic that things are slowly starting to change for the better, after the "me-first" attitudes that per- vaded the last couple of dec- ades. He feels strongly that Kins- men must do a better job getting their message to the public, and that's one of the messages he'll be taking to delegates at the convention in Thunder Bay. Mr. Robinson has served the organization in positions at the local, district and national level. Please recycle this newspaper There are 16,000 Kinsmen and Kinettes across Canada, and in 1989, he's proud to say they raised $27.5 million for charity and community work. Since the organization is Canadian, almost all of that money stayed within this coun- try. y His own District 8 (Port Hope to West Toronto, north to Cochrane) raised over $2.8 mil- lion, including $500,000 for cys- tic fibrosis research and treat- ment. Getting himself elected vice-president will be a big job, a time consuming one and a costly one. He told the Star he's very grateful to fellow members of his home club and members within District 8 who made per- sonal contributions to his cam- paign, as well as assistance from areas businesses such as the Royal Bank, the Port Perry Star, Port Perry Printing and RJM Photo. He's grateful for all the sup- port he's getting in this bid for election, and hopes it all comes to a successful end later this month when he faces the dele- gates and asks for their votes.
