E PORT PERRY STAR -- Wednesday, August 8, 1990 -- 17 New things to see at Museum by Mary Lynne Williamson, Curator/Director The busy summer season is well underway at the Scugog Shores Museum Village. Our Summer tour guides, Kimberley McLaughlin and Catherine Pavlik, have certainly had their hands full the past two months keeping up with the seasonal flood of visitors and assisting perma- nent staff with more mundane (but equally necessary!) ad- ministrative tasks such as inven- tory and cataloguing of incoming donations. We find that we become very dependent on our students during the summer months, and we will miss them in September when they return to school -- Catherine to Port Perry High School and Kimberley to Algonquin College in Ottawa, where she will be entering a three-year Museum Technology Program. At the moment we are gearing Exploring Scugog up for our second Pioneer Day Camp at the Museum, which will run for the week of August 13-17 in the mornings. The program will be similar to last year's suc- cessful Day Camp, giving children the opportunity to sam- ple games, crafts, cooking and ac- tivities of Pioneer and Victorian times. The fee for this program is $25 per child, which covers the costs of materials and food for the week. Anyone wishing to register their child for the program, or wanting more information about our Day Camp, may call the Museum at 985-3589. If the de- mand is sufficient, we will be ad- ding on an extra week to the program. New things to see at the Museum this summer include a temporary exhibit of vintage phonographs and other '"'talking machines," on loan to us from Oshawa collector Horst Weggler. Mr. Weggler's collection has been Week is here Exploring Scugog Week is here! Monday we spent the day at Goreski's Marina for a big beach party. We played volleyball, ate watermelon and hunted for buried treasure. On Tuesday we explored "Nature trails at Purple Woods and had an exciting scavenger hunt. Coming up this week, Bowling at Centennial Lanes. Rollerskating and a whole day at Pleasure Valley. . The last week of Arts Camp was really terrific, we made pot- pourri sachets, ornamental brooms, gimp bracelets, we painted ceramic figurines tye- dyed t-shirts and much more. Philip Krohn, Alex and Spencer Bedell and Deanna Latrielle 'demonstrated _ excellence in rama Games. Don't forget next week is "Fitness for Fun," a program jam-packed with games, sports, swimming and fun. Hope to see you there. Have a great summer! Julie. Joanne. All of the machines are in working order and the display is well worth a visit. Also, the Museum's display of agricultural equipment and vehicles has recently been revamped, thanks to the hard work of several of our volunteers. Our new "Favorite" threshing machine, manufac- tured by the Ernst Brothers of Mount Forest, Ontario, forms a major part of this new display. As you drive by our site on the Island Road, you may notice that our Print Shop has received a badly-needed face lift, thanks to the energetic efforts of the Thai and Canadian participants in this year's Canada World Youth ex- change program. These young people braved ladders, scaf- folding, and one of the hottest days of the summer to do this ser- vice for our museum and the com- munity, and we want to thank all of them for being such good sports and such professional painters! The Museum is open for tours seven days a week, from 1-5 p.m. For more information, please give us a call or drop by our offices.
