PORT PERRY STAR -- Wednesday, August 8, 1990 -- 5 'Scugog band support Oka Mohawks The Mississaugas of Scu- gog First Nation have issued a statement of support for the Oka Mohawks involved in a bit- ter land dispute in the small community west of Montreal. Last week, members of the Scugog First Nation band coun- cil put up a sign in front of the bana office on Scugog Island which expresses their support for the Oka natives. PPO Scugog band chief Yvonne Edgar, along with band council- lors Rick Edgar and Art Goose, issued the statement of sup- ™ Chief Edgar said the sign in front of the band office will re- main up until the Oka dispute is settled. And she said the Scugog First Nation supports all na- tives in the country who are fighting for their aboriginal rights. Asked about the show of 'force by the Mohawks at Oka, Chief Edgar said "we are a proud nation, we are not a vio- lent group." She said it's unfortunate the Oka dispute turned violent, and perhaps this could have been avoided if the federal gov- ernment had reacted more quickly in the first place. Councillor Rick Edgar said "we are all hoping the (Oka) dis- pute gets settled peacefully." The dispute erupted three weeks ago os the Oka munic- ipal council moved ahead with plans to expand a golf course on nds the Oka Mohawks consid- er sacred and theirs. The federal government has announced it is trying to buy the land and give it to the Oka band council. The Mississaugas of Scu- gog have about 630 acres of band land on g Island, and more land that is privately owned. Chief Edgar said the band has lived on Scugog Island for at least 160 years. When the Scu- gog River was dammed to create lake Scugog, it wiped out traditional native harvesting of wild rice and cranberries. In a recent edition of Smoke Signals, a native publi- cation serving the United Indi- an Councils of which the Missis- saugas are a member, there is an article stating that at one time the Scugog band held abo- riginal title to all of the Island. The article goes on to say that the Scugog First Nation has started an inquiry into the status and history of the lake- shore property in an effort to have Crown lands returned. Chief Edgar said the band has no land to give direct access to Lake Scugog. The provincial government owns and controls about 400 acres of Crown land at the northern tip of Scugog Island.
