As I write this, Canada is sending three ships to the Mid- dle East. I hope it will be all over before our ships arrive in the Gulf. . 'Ways and Means chairper- son Bob Douglas would like ide- _ as for future fund-raising. = He organized the recent 1 golf tournament and the up- '{ coming Turkey roll on August "2b Every month we get letters asking for financial help, and very few are turned down. , But if we are going to help, |" first we have to make some money. _ Just a few of the places that get help from the Legion are the hospital, minor hockey, base- ball, soccer and Scouts. I have been asked to ex- plain the Poppy money; this I attended all his life and served faithfully ir all capacities. Rev Nancy Waterman gave a wonder- ful tribute to Walter with kind words and prayer. Music enrich- ed the service as it had always done in Walter's life. Sandra Kerry was the pianist for her un- cle's funeral and accompanied the congregation while they sang a few of his favourite hymns. The choir sang beautiful ar- rangements of the 23rd Psalm and The Lord's Prayer. Pallbearers were Grant and Brian Kerry, Bill and Robert Stearman, Ron Myers and Jack Switzer. Flowerbearers were Chris and Kate Stearman, Steven and Jeffrey Switzer, Michael Russell and Kevin Kerry. These were all Walter's nephews and a neice. Following the burial in Kendall cemetery, Utica, the many Legion report will do at a later date. Help is available through the Legion to veterans and fam- ilies of veterans. Contact Mr. Jack Lee. For these members who have forgotten to renew their memberships, get in touch with chairperson Gwen. Don't forget the corn roast on August 24. This should be a great time for all. A request to members who receive the Legion magazine: after you are finished reading them, drop them off in the hos- pital or in doctors or dentist of- fices, nursing home or the schools. The Legion is made up of men and women who served their country, some in time of war. We are still serving our country in different ways, and having fun doing it. We hope to be able to make this country a better place for our children and for you. Walter's life centered around his family, farm, job and com- munity. He always supported his children in all their endeavours. On his farm and his woodlot near Sprucedale he thoroughly enjoyed working close to nature. Walter took pride in 'his beef herd and potato crop. For the past eighteen years Walter worked for Assinck Bros., Markham, where he established many fine acquaintances. No job was ever too small or complex for Walter's gift of creativity. His involvement in the com- munity began early with 4H, both as a member and later as a leader. Junior Farmers provided an opportunity for growth in leadership and his musical talent. The leadership skills he acquired at this time were valuable in years to come as he served on countless committees within his community. He was a member of many award winning quartettes and choirs. He also sang as a soloist at weddings, church ser- vices and other occasions. More recently he sang with the Millstream Men of Uxbridge, many barbershop quartettes and the Epsom-Utica Church choir. People will long remember the enjoyment he have them with his gift of music. Walter touched the lives of many people in all walks of life. It is with fond memories that we honour him for the great heritage he has left to his family and community. He will be sadly missed by all who knew him.
