"The people of Durham East (riding) can compete, if they are doing so on a level play- ing field. The Liberals are tax- ing us to death, and we have had enough," he stated. On other issues, he called for the GO Train extension to Bowmanville, a commitment for new sewer services in com- munities like Port Perry and Brooklin, a solution to the mounting garbage crisis, and a tough look at the proposed new Highway 407. Kemp said he believes the proposed corridors for Highway Back to School Specials from $199.00 TYPEWRITER SALES & SERVICE - repairs to IBM & Smith Corona - & All Other Makes - Ribbons for all makes & models - including Printers - We pickup and delivery 3 1DAY (9 AY BUSINESS EQUIPMENT LER EX] 728-7591 407 are too far south, putting in Jeopardy good farmland and wa- ter quality of streams and creeks. Kemp, who appears young- er than his 31 years, is a life long resident of the Bowman- ville area. With his father, he oper- ates an apple orchard. He and his wife Sheila have a three- year old son, Eric. Though he has worked for the local Conservative Associa- tion, this is his first attempt at elected office. The meeting August 8, which nominated Kemp, also gave Durham East Tories a chance to say good-bye to Sam Cureatz, who held the riding for 13 years. Cureatz, who was nominat- ed to run again in the Septem- ber 6 election, decided instead to get out of politics and return tolaw practise in Newcastle. The former MPP wished Kemp well at the nomination meeting, telling him "from now on, it's your show." Kemp's community in- volvement includes director of Bowmanville Lions, a steward in St. Paul's United Church, and co-leader of St. Paul's Youth Group. Guest speaker at Kemp's nomination was Ontario Con- servative Party president Kay Wetherall, and she also took the opportunity to blast Peterson and the Liberals for calling an election at this time. At one point, she referred to the election as "Peterson's $40 million ego trip," noting that amount of money would buy two complete GO Trains with nine cars each. She also charged that Pe- terson called the election at this time because "he's afraid the economy will sag next year, and he's afraid of the damage from the Patti Starr affain." Kemp said he/ was ""sad- dened" to learn that Cureatz was retiring from politics. "Everywhere I travel in this riding, I hear nothing but praise for Sam for his work over the last 14 years," he said. And he drew a chuckle from the partisan crowd when he de- clared "Yes, I do have some big shoes to fill. But I've got big feet and they are still growing." Police seizing radar devices in Port Perry Durham Region Police have laid numerous charges re- cently in the Uxbridge-Port Perry areas against drivers found with radar detectors in their vehicles.
