SEPTEMBER 6th, 1990 a | | Co | __ Letters io the editor BIA ad misleading To the Editor: I take exception to the ad runn- ing in your paper and seen on posters in stores, stating that it costs $18.36 to drive round trip to Oshawa for shopping. In all fairness, this is misleading adver- tising, as car insurance, licence, depreciation and financing are fixed costs, even if a car never leaves the driveway, and we know this erroneous figure is based on a late model car which is not the case for every driver who may choose to drive to Oshawa. Isn't the message true in reverse? We are telling Oshawa people that it costs $18.36 to shop in Port Perry, so stay home in Oshawa and save money. If this is what a B.I.A. stands for, it should be abolished. I am 'embarrassed to be a member of the Port Perry B.1.A. and call for the resignation of its board of directors. Robert J. If governments, were forced to serve for a set number of years, they wouldn't be able to call an election on an important single issue. But, then again, do we really want to elect people on a single-issue - campaign? If politicians felt they needed to consult the public in the middle of a term, they could opt for a public referendum. Given the obvious solution to the problem of elections called un- necessarily, one cannot help but wonder why the subject hasn't been discussed by the major political parties. Although the opposition parties have criticized Ontario's premier for calling an unnecessary election, they haven't yet gone so far as to suggest a scheme which would do away with unnecessary elec- tions entirely. We could have a system in which the public only goes to the polls as the result of a vote by a majority of parliament or the expiration of a fixed term of office.
