Amea Wilbur about to leave on 7-month CWY exchange A Utica-area resident leaves tomorrow for the adventure of her life. Amea Wilbur, 20, will spend six months in Quebec and Bra- zil as a participant in a Canada World Youth exchange. The CWY program provides the opportunity for both partici- pants and community members to develop a heightened aware- ness of the realities of life in the Third World and 'in another part of Canada. Amea's exchange' group will consist of 14 young adults -- seven from Canada and seven from Brazil. After a two-week orientation at Camp Katimavik de L'ile Perrot in Montreal, the partici- Doms will be paired up (a Cana- ian and a Brazilian) and host- ed by a family in a Quebec community. "I guess they will give us an idea of what to expect from the program," Amea said about the orientation, adding that it will be the first time she will meet the group leader and other par- ticipants. At the Star's publication deadline, Amea' said she was unsure what community she would be staying in, but said the location would be some- where between Lac St. Jean and Trois Rivieres. "I went to a French school up until Grade 8, but I haven't done much French for a while," Amea admitted. During the orientation, the group will learn about Quebec culture and study the French language. The group will volunteer in the social service sector, per- haps working at daycares and hospitals, she said. On December 6, the partici- pantsleave for Brazil. Amea said the group will go thro a similar two-week or- ientation, but this time they will learn about Brazilian cul- ture and the Portuguese lan- guage. Although the area where the group is going to in Brazil is own for its cattle farming, Amea said the group will con- tinue to work in the social ser- vice sector. ] The Brazilian diet is high in beefand Ameaisa vegetarian. __"I don't eat meat, but I guess I'm going to," she told the Star. This will be the first Christ- mas she hasn't spent at home with her family. "I've never been away from home at Christmas. It will be a different experience. "It's not celebrated in the same way in Brazil," she said, adding that it is not as commer- cialin that country. Amea decided to apply as a participant for the Canada World Youth exchange pro- gram last December. At that time, her family was hosting the group leaders for a CWY ex- change in Scugog Township be- tween Canada and Ecuador participants. Scugog is once again hosting a CWY exchange, this time be- tween Canada and Thailand. And again, Amea's family is hosting the group leaders from both countries. Because CWY is a non- governmental, non-profit or- ganization, Amea had to find sponsors to help cover a portion of the exchange costs. She would like to thank the Rotary Club, Lions Club and Fowler, Davies law firm for . their contributions. The CWY program is open to young adults between 17 and 20 years of age from a wide range of socio-economic back- grounds. Applications are accepted from September to January each year.
