PORT PERRY STAR -- Five party hopefuls Ward boundaries could be changed for next election square off at All Candidates Meeting Five candidates vying for the Durham East riding seat in the Sept. 6 election, squared off at Durham Christian School in Bowmanville during an all can- didates meeting Tuesday. Harry Tunbridge of the Con- federation of Regions said his party stands for honest policies and decent values. "You and I have let them slip," he said, adding, "We don't seem to care anymore." Mr. Tunbridge said the cur- rent provincial and federal leaders do what they want and not what the people want. "I want the silent majority to stand up and be counted," he said, adding the COR party would do what the people asked. He also blasted Prime Minis- ter Brian Mulroney, Premier David Peterson and Premier Robert Bourassa -- the Meech Boys, as he calls them -- for throwing the country into chaos. "Mr. Mulroney tried to give away Canada," Mr. Tunbridge stated. "He took away the cul- J0. has took years to estab- ish. Councillor Yvonne Christie has introduced a notice of mo- tion which s sts the area council seat be abolished, and replaced with a new ward seat from Wards 1 and 2. The matter has been in front of council for informal dis- cussion several times in the last couple of years, with council generally in favour of doing away with the area council seat. What hasn't been estab- lished yet is just where the boundaries of a newly created ward would fall. Any change in the make-up" of the council must be approved before the end of this year if it is to apply to the next election a year from November. The Township council is now made up of a mayorand re- gional councillor elected by all Township voters, four ward reps elected only by voters in those wards, and one area coun- cillor elected by all Township voters. : If the proposal comes into effect, Scugog would have five wards, instead of the current four, along with the mayor and regional councillor. MEN WANTED! The current system was put in place when Scugog was "amalgamated under Regional Government in 1974 from the four existing municipalities: Port Perry Village, Reach, Scu gog Island and Cartwright Townships.
