COPE program to sponsor a self-esteem workshop The COPE program will soon commence with its fall activities. The COPE program (formerly C.I.V.P. Community Involvement and Volunteer Program) was established to assist people under emotional stress. They work with people living in the community who are going through a par- ticularly stressful time in their lives and with those who have been recently discharged from psychiatric units. Trained volunteers working under profes- sional supervision, assist people who have been referred by agen- cies, by assisting people with life skills on a one to one basis. Besides the one-to-one matches a weekly mental health support group is offered. The Port Perry support group is an outreach programme of COPE which provides an oppor- tunity for people with emotional problems to share their feelings with others, develop friendships, enhance their communication and/or life skills, combat loneliness and boredom and learn to use community resources. COPE will be sponsoring a workshop on 'self-esteem' on Monday, September 24, 1990 at 7:30 p.m. at the Anglican Church, 274 North St., Port Perry. This evening will be presented by San- dra Sweet from Simcoe Hall Set- tlement House. Please feel free to attend this workshop and meet volunteers in- volved with the COPE program. If you are interested in becoming a COPE volunteer a free training session will be commencing this fall, The course provides a "hands-on" experience in obser- ving, listening, and responding to people's feelings, problem solv- ing, as well as some information on psychiatric illnesses.
