TIS x ' . ee -- 1st Port Perry Scouting Group started getting ready for another year of Beavers, Cubs & Scouts by holding a pre-registration group committee meeting. Again this year the Beavers & Cubs will meet at the Church of the Ascen- sion Hall & the Scouts will con- tinue to meet at the Legion Branch 419 thanks to their generosity. The group is wishing to attract a couple of new leaders for Beavers to enable them to start a second colony because of their an- ticipated growth. Last year 1st Port Perry registered a total of 56 boys, an increase of 20% over the previous year. Most of last years leaders will return again this year and a couple of new leaders have already volunteered, but more help is still required. Lloyd Greenough explained to the group what Scouters have been hearing for three years call- ed Essential Training had taken a new name "Volunteer Recruit- ment & Development." What does this mean? It means that our group committee will look for adults who enjoy working with young people, recognize the time involved in running a successful program and are prepared to take training to increase their skills & knowledge for their Scouting role. Several training courses are available for new leaders and are paid for by the Group Committee. Beavers is a fun program designed in Canada to meet the interest of 5, 6, and 7 year old boys. The simple flexible pro- gram is based on the theme of Beavers & and Beaver Colony. It focuses on sharing & learning in a group situation in harmony with nature. Last year the Beavers were treated to tours of the Port Perry Firehall and Pete's Pet Pantry as well as Winter Fun Day hosted by Cannington, and a Beaveree, hosted by Uxbridge. This year it is hoped they will attend a Regional Beaveree at Greenwood Conservation Area. The Wolf Cub program is design- ed for boys 8 to 10 years of age. It is based on a mixture of games, craft, music, stories, acting, out- door activities, star work and badge work. It allows the boys to work together in small groups to complete projects as well as recognition for individual achievement. The Cubs had local trapper Al Wakeford and musi- cian Irwin Smith attend their meetings to entertain and show Calla Lilly Studio Fall Workshops AN beginning Sept. 10 through Dec. 8 A Watercolopr// pastel, Mon 7pm 1130 am Set! ya - (Claldren © wn Pours ol * For more information please call 852-3944 their skills and share their knowledge. In January, the Cubs attended a weekend camp at Camp Samac where Larry Emmerson supplied that little bit extra excitement every boy needs. Some of the other events attended were a Bike Rodeo in Blackstock where Jeff Morden won his third champion- ship, the Kub Kar Rally at Port Perry Legion where again 1st Port Perry faired very well and a weekend camp in Sunderland for Cuboree. This year Cubs everywhere will be planning events to celebrate the 75th year of Cubbing. Scouts is a program designed for boys 11 to 15 years of age. Many of the Scout activities place emphasis on living and playing outdoor in harmony with nature and the en- vironment. Hiking, camping, games, exploring, summer and winter sports comprise the prin- cipal activites. Scouts made Kub Kars this year and compteted as a group for the first time which is to become an annual event and took part in camping trips under Scout Leader Bob Brown and Floyd Kyte.
