Campaign winds down From Page 1 during the final days of the cam- paign was to continue what she's been doing from the out- set: hard work, long hours, stressing fundamental issues like transportation, the envi- ronment and preservation of foodlands. Commenting on the prov- ince-wide poll last week which suggested the possibility of a minority government, Pearce said that would almost certain- ly lead to another election in two years. : She said minority govern- ment would lead to instability in the province and not project the kind of message to bolster investor confidence. For New Democratic candi- date Gord Mills, he concedes his campaign got off to a slow start, but picked up momentum as it wentalong. The 62-year old Orono resi- dent who works for a small weekly newspaper in that com- munity, said the message he's hearing from people is that "they want change," and "are fad up with our tax system." He called the promise by David Peterson to cut the sales tax by one per cent a "cyncial vote getting device." And as for Conservative leader Mike Harris' promise to freeze taxes, Mills said "just look at their past record." Mills said he's "skeptical" the GO-Train start-up date next fall will be kept. "The service is certainly needed, but I wonder if (the promise) is not just an election plum." Mills said he thinks the re- sults in Durham East will be close, and he's hoping to garner support from what he called the "soft Liberal vote." Harry Tunbridge, 62, who is running his first ever campa- ing under the Confederation of Regions banner, told the Star he's delighted with the response he's getting from people. e admits that initially he went into the campaign pessi-' about bilingualism and what this means, employment, and 8. Tunbridge, who lives in Brooklin, is realistic about his chances in this election (he'd be happy to finish third, ahead of one of the "big three" party can- didates) but said the party is laying the groundwork for fu- ture campaigns, and he will be a candidate in the next provin- cial election. "What I've been hearing has made me more determined that ever before," he told the Star. _ He's run a low budget ¢am- paign, stating he expects to spend about $1500. As for the last few days of the race, he said simply, "I'l just keep plugging away." Tim Crookall, 31, running for the Family Coalition Party, said he's confident of his chanc- es. He doesn't like the fact Family Coalition is sometimes labelled a "fringe party," and stated flatly: "We are going to surprise a lot of people in this election. I'm not ruling out the chance of a win. With five new candidates, PLEASE RECYCLE THIS PAPER the ridingis up for grabs." Crookall, who ivesin Cour- tice, went on to say no matter what the outcome, he feels he's done a gcod job in getting the FCP moisage to the people of Durham East. The Party is staunchly anti-abortion, though Crookall said this is just one part of the overall platform to restore what he terms "more traditional fam- ily values and morals." Crookall said he's getting positive reponse in all areas of the riding, and will pick up sup- port from Liberals and Conser- vatives unhappy with fiscal pol- icies and unhappy with what he called the "drift away from tra- ditional values." He said this campaign has given the party the chance tc build a local organization and be better prepared financiany to fight in the next provincial election. "We'll be starting to cam- paign for the next one on Sep- tember 7," he told the Star. The voting polls open to- morrow (Thursday, September 6) at 9:00 AM and will remain open until 8:00 PM. § 55 FORDER-PARKS INSURANCE BROKERS INC. 34 Water St, Port Perry, Ont.
